May 2 Wedding-covid-19 Cancel/postponement

Ruwandi, on March 25, 2020 at 14:26 Posted in WeddingWire 0 9

Hey guys,

Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy these days! My fiancee and I have come to the conclusion that we will have to cancel or postpone our wedding that was scheduled to happen May 2. We were wondering how other couples found their discussion with their venues? Has anyone been able to get refunded for a cancellation? We were told its too early to consider a cancellation as the closure of non-essential businesses are only for the next 14 days, and the rule around mass gatherings over 50 was a recommendation, not mandatory.

We were given alternative 2020 dates from June-December (we felt as though the summer dates might be too soon) and they were not open to anything in 2021 at the current moment. Given that we are both moving out of province in July, it is harder for us to decide on a date this year. Have any other couples been able to move their date to the following year?

Thanks

Our wedding was set for April 25 and we got all our deposits back except for the DJ. Everyone else we were over the 31 days cancelation requirement. However our venue, the biggest deposit, was one of those discretionary refund" things. We canceled with them as required in writing and they stated they would have to let us know about the refund as at the time there was nothing to say this would still be in place at the time. Well we got an email from them about 4days later stating that they would be refunding us because they are closing down completely until May 15th.

I agree! In our contract there is no clause about acts of dog or force majeure. At this point the situation is getting worse day by day so we’re hoping to revisit this in 2 weeks and see if they come up with a better solution-especially since now Ford has announced no mass gatherings over 5 people.

Venues are working with couples to move the date or refund based on their decision. Some couples have been lucky to get the money back while others postponed. Move your date to avoid all the loss of the deposit the month before you move. It seems tough to be in this situation along with others and keeping the hope of everything going well.

We’re considering cancelling our bridal shower may 3 and I’m fairly certain we won’t be refunded unless they’re actually closed on May 3.

So we will go ahead as planned as long as they’re open May 3.

I' sorry to hear you're going through this. It's unfortunate that rather than trying to work with the couple on a solution based on healthy best practices, your venue is seemingly trying to squeeze every penny they can.

I would wait until April 1 and see what the situation is. I highly doubt the case numbers will go down by then as it's only a week from now, which means the gatherings of over 50 will likely not be lifted. Schools are already announced as not running past April 6 so that's more evidence suggesting the government will be against any large events. If they're playing the government loophole game, this will give you more leverage.

Do you have wedding insurance? Any clauses in your venue contract regarding force majeur or acts of god?

By the way, if anyone tries to weasel you into a locked commitment by exploiting a supposed loophole that gatherings of over 50 are just "recommendation," you can pretty much tell to shove it (excuse my language). These "recommendations" are put forth by a public health agency, most of them being an arm of the OPP with the ability to impose fines for endangering the public's health. Assuming your venue is a public business, with a kitchen for food handling and staff to run the place, that means they need to be regularly inspected. Unless they want to get ticketed by a Public Health Agency for violating Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, they better tone down their pressure tactics.

There is a YouTuber named Jamie Wolfer who has a great list of things to consider when postponing your wedding. She is a wedding planner in California.

I'm surprised that they wouldn't let you postpone until 2021, but I suppose they're probably worried that they'll lose the whole wedding season for the year if they do that.
