Mason jar painting

acrylic paint on mason jarsacrylic pain on mason jars

Hi everyone,

I started painting some mason jars this weekend and thought I would share this tip. Originally I was planning to use chalk paint because I saw that used on pinterest and I really liked the effect. I looked at Canadian Tire first because we don't have a Michaels close by, but they only had one colour and it wasn't what I wanted. That's where I also discovered that chalk paint is super expensive compared to what I expected! Around $30 for one small can of about 500mL. So I went to the dollar store and bought some acrylic paint, they were $1.25 each, total came to less than $15 for everything I needed . The acrylic paint worked perfect, looks just the same as chalk paint, exactly the look I am going for. I bought a can of matte sealant that I will put over them afterwards (at Michaels, for about $11 but I had a 40% off coupon). I'm planning to distress the jars a bit with sand paper before I apply the sealant. I'll post the finish product. Oh and I got the jars and picture frames at Value Village for super cheap too Smiley smile

Just wanted to share in case anyone else is planning to do this - don't spend tons of money on expensive chalk paint, good old dollar store will do the trick!

Thanks! Yes, we are using as part of our centerpieces. Our guests will be seated at 6 foot tables and each table will have a crate/flower pot centerpiece in the middle and then we will put one mason jar with flowers on either side. The crates are a bit too bulky to have 3 on each table and having only 1 per table would not be enough, so we are going with mason jars as well. They will be spread out evenly along the length of the table. We're also using them as general décor for the catering table, guestbook table, etc. Wherever there is an area that needs some colour!

    Crates will look like this:
