Mandatory mask laws & your wedding

Anna, on July 6, 2020 at 09:55 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 6

Anyone else worried about this?
My area has tabled a mandatory mask law policy for indoor spaces. It's being debated by council today. I imagine it would pass, as Guelph, Kingston, and Toronto's have.
I am getting married in a church on 08/08/2020 and although we were going to encourage mask use for family, the thought of myself and my fiancé at the altar with a mask on is devastating to me.
I wrote to the councilors last week asking them to exempt private events (in church settings) because I understand why it would be required at public mass... but, for 10 people in a church who are already in our bubble it really seems overkill. Anyone else dealing with these concerns?

The city is trying to keep things safe despite of the events taking place and understandable on their part. I also see you want an exempt for your day as family can just be close without the mandatory request.

I don't know how it would go with the church priest to allow the request unless he feels the chances are high for your family safety. The answer will be known when asked. I do hope things look up for you and your day.

I don't know about other cities but in Toronto, if you refuse to wear a mask, for better or worse it's highly likely the city will do nothing about it. Our Mayor has pretty much said that enforcement will not be aggressive and admitted that he doesn't have the resources to be going around places and ticketing people. It'll be up to the individual businesses to ensure mask policies are in place. And if someone claims to have a health issue that prevents them from wearing masks, businesses are not to ask for proof. So there's that.

Yes we are going to speak to our priest for sure! The mandatory mask bylaw officially passed in my area and comes into effect July 13th with places of worship included. Its yet another curveball thrown our way....

The bylaw has officially passed in my area. If it were outside we would not have to wear masks. Inside, we do. It's a Catholic ceremony so it has to take place inside.

YES. We are full steam ahead with planning a small family ceremony. I was actually feeling pretty okay about it and then when mandatory masking laws started rolling out I had a crying fit over having to potentially wear a mask during our ceremony, especially because I have impaired hearing and have trouble hearing sometimes with masks. I would talk with your officiant about it (I plan to). We would be 6 feet away from everyone except each other and are willing to have all of our guests and the officiant wear masks.

It seems silly to me to have the bride and groom, who are going to kiss and it is safe to assume kissed the day before, wear masks. I could understand the officiant wearing one a little more but that's still annoying.

Our area has a lot of rules about bubbles and indoor vs outdoor gatherings. If you do the ceremony outside do you still need to wear the masks? Would the church allow the marriage in the grounds of the church, or is it a Catholic ceremony?
