Making my own Wedding Cake

Emilyn, on December 5, 2019 at 21:35 Posted in DIY 0 7
Okay so everyone thinks I am crazy but I am really set on making my own wedding cake!!! I am thinking of just doing a small hand decorated one and then getting a sheet cake for everyone to have dessert as well for all 200 guests. I should add that I have some experience with cakes and cake decorating, I'm not going into this completely blindly lol. Has anyone else tried making their own wedding cake? Thoughts? Opinions?

I will most likely make a small 6" cake for my wedding. However, I know if I don't get to it my mom will make it for me. I'm buying mini buntlet cakes for everyone else. I thought about making cup cakes but vetoed that for fear I'll have too much on my plate.

Im actually making a fake 7 tier cake for display!! its so cheap and easy to do. fondant is sooo easy to work with and then i glued some jewels on it. i did a test cake and it turned out great! i think you can totally do this and it will save you tons of $$$$$

Looking back on my wedding day - too busy to make it the day before or the day of - but if you make it prior to that then I think it would be fine.

So if you are getting married on the Saturday - make the cake no later than the Thursday!

I had every intention of making my own since I also have a lot of experience. But literally everyone talked me out of it, and I agreed in the end, that I would be too busy with everything else in the week leading up to the big day. Knowing me I probably would've forgotten all about it too Smiley xd

My sister is a trained chef that use to do wedding cakes/cupcakes and I helped, so I speak from some level of experience....lol.

One big thing I would weigh in on this decision is finding out when your vendor set-up is because that is when you have to bring in/set-up the cake and do touch-ups from transporting it (we always had to do touch-ups with the set-up no matter how careful we were during transport). If it is in between ceremony and reception, you'll be doing your pictures and/or in your dress. If it's the morning of, it might overlap with you getting ready.

I am not trying to convince you not to make your own cake, but I would recommend at least find another find with experience cake decorating to do the set-up the day of because it rarely works out timing-wise. You don't need that added stress.

My one worry would be how busy and stressed you could be in the days leading up to the wedding.

If it were me, I would weigh the cost savings vs the possible stress. If it still makes sense after weighing the pros and cons then go for it. After all it is YOUR big day!
