Maria, on December 21, 2016 at 15:11 Posted in DIY 0 18
So I've been thinking about making my own cake.. just not sure yet if it would cost more to get it made or a DIY instead. I love decorating cakes? anyone else making their own cake?

I’m in the same boat, he thinks anything we can get someone else to do the better so we can enjoy the most of our day. I totally agree, but since I earn more I’m paying a bigger portion of the wedding and wanna save money anywhere I can. He doesn’t factor in the money as much, he says we shouldn’t because there’s always more money to be made but time is something you can never get back! He can be so wise but we can both be right sometimes.. it just depends who you ask!!! ARGHH

I've been seriously considering making our cake myself. My fiancé is worried that it'll stress me out, but I think it would be fun. Plus, think of all the practice cake we'll get to eat!!

Hi Maria, we ordered our wedding cake as we are not allowed to have any foods brought in that is not licensed due to health and safety. If you are able to, go for it as I saw the pictures of the cake you made which is nice. Smiley smile

And yes, I have no doubt you'll be totally fine Smiley laugh for transport just drive nice and smooth and take turns easy! And keep the car cold and block the sun (lessons I learned the hard way....I i have no sense).
Make sure you show us pictures of your trial run! I'm excited for you!

Awe thanks soo much & yes I want to do a practice cake first just so I know what needs to be better & yes transporting it is what scares me. But I'm sure it'll be fine, I'm going to do the cake fairly simple, navy fondant with silver sparkles, like the first photo I posted, just not as big. Smiley smile

That is beautiful! if you can make pretty flowers you will have no problem....and mistakes? put a flower on it! Smiley smile

Sounds like you will have no issue doing it yourself ( yay! I'm not the only one now!) If you are doing a tiered cake I really recommend trying one first, so you can get a feel for it. They can be frustrating the first couple of times. I watched a LOT of youtube videos! and woodem rods in a small square formation (about 2 inches apart) will help hold everything together for transport- just be aware of them when you are serving Smiley winking

    And your apron is adorable!

Wow that cake looks amazing! And I agree with Valerie! We did a 2 tiered display cake and then sheet cake for the rest so it was cheaper and it worked great! (We did not make it ourselves though.)

Yeah I think that's what I'm doing to do, because I know getting it made professionally will be wayy to experience. I work at a grocery store and we have a bakery I'm sure our baker would gladly make me a sheet cake for about 20$ however I am going to make a tester cake first just to see how it goesSmiley smile

You're welcome! You could also just bake the layer or 2 yourself since you have experience and just order a sheet cake for the guests. Lots of possibilities out there for every budgetSmiley laugh I have crazy DIY projects but I'm definitely not brave enough to even attempt the cake lol

Thanks!! I do have experience with cakes aswell, never made a very big one like the one I'll need for my wedding, I included a photo of a cake I made last year, was for my mom & brothers bday. I do place to keep it simple, just Rolling out navy fondant and adding some simple designs to it. Since we are on a budget I'll just get some help from my mom to bake it and decorate it myself. But yes it must be very time consuming.

Oh also, check with your caterer, most of the time they include a dessert so you would need as much cake if it's not the main dessert

What Melissa said! Also if you decide not to because of time or whatever, you can always just have a sheet cake for guests and if you really want something on display, get a small 2 tier just to cut. You could just go to a local bakery or even Costco for the sheet cake (no one's going to see it anyways, it usually gets cut and plated in the kitchen or a back room) and it would be MUCH cheaper

    I am!

I have baked for a few weddings, (I'll share pics when I'm home from work) and have a pretty good history with it So i have decided to go for it!

Have you done some formal cakes before? They do take a lot of work, so I know it ins't ideal for some brides. I will be taking the 2 days leading up to my wedding off in order to make my cake.

You will certainly save money- but not time! A professional bakery is also charging for their skills and the time it takes to create a design and make it happen. So you will have to add that investment yourself. I would suggest keeping your cake quite simple if you make it yourself....otherwise you might run into time consuming issues that a pro wouldn't have!
