Logistics of Selling Drink Tickets

Brittany, on March 11, 2019 at 13:04 Posted in Wedding reception 0 15

Hey wondering what you have all seen, or plan on doing yourself.

We are doing a toonie bar for our wedding.

Before anyone tries to change my mind about that, don't bother.

One... my family drinks too much to do open bar. And two... I see a lot of booze wasted at open bars.

Plus a toonie bar is still super cheap for people to drink. (And we will be doing champagne toasts)

My problem is my bar will not handle or keep any cash. Only drink tickets.

And according to AGLC drink ticket sellers need to be 18+

So do I hire someone to sit there the whole night and sell tickets?

Do I have a parent do it? But I want them to be able to enjoy themselves without being harassed every five minutes.

Any other suggestions?

I was thinking of having like 15 minutes windows every hour where people can buy tickets... but I do not know how well that would work.

I'm not sure this is a concern all of us have. I know it isn't for me and my FH. A toonie bar isn't going to make it unreasonable for people to drink to their hearts content at our (or OP's) wedding. And if people bring in a flask, it doesn't bother us.

Ohhhhh it's your liquor too!!! Sorry I missed that part! I assumed the venue could up an extra person but that makes sense!

My sisters was a gong show. But everyone thought the prices were ridiculous. We were all staying at the hotel, so most just went up to their hotel room and pounded drinks quickly. But there were definitely quite a few with flasks.

My dad already talked about going to his trailer for drinks Smiley ups but I am hoping most people won't be cheap enough to sneak booze in when they can get drunk for way cheaper than any bar they would go to. We will see I guess.

Noted. Sounds like you're super prepared - well done!

The first time I've considered that guests might bring their own was just now, and then all I could think about is the 4 weddings episodes where the brides did!

Yeah I might have someone selling for the start of the night. And do a couple other times throughout that they can buy.

Sorry what about people bringing their own booze?

I do not think we will have to worry about it, with drink prices being so reasonable.

Plus the bartenders on site will kick anyone out they see with outside liquor.

People did it at my sisters wedding, but only because it was $8 dollars a drink at the hotel.

    Agreed.

I like the idea of pre-purchasing.

I'm curious though - are you concerned about guests bring their own alcohol? Or is that just a concern all of us always have, no matter the wedding day drink plan?

We are doing the same thing. This is our plan:

We have one of our bridal party taking care of this during the cocktail hour, while other bridal party members greet guests (we'll be doing family photos, since cocktail hour starts immediately after the ceremony). We'll shut down ticket sales during dinner, then reopen it for one hour after dinner - we have another volunteer for that time.

We figure that'll be enough, but our venue is just a community hall, so our volunteer bartenders are willing to handle cash later if people need more tickets (though I imagine the 2 hours of time will be plenty for folks to buy what they need, mostly). In your situation, you could have a third time where it's available again for another 30 minutes, maybe.

I think having someone sell them at cocktail hour would work well, and then have them available again later on in the night for 1/2 an hour or so.

Do you have a family member or a friend who can sell drink tickets during the cocktail hour?

I would say that if I were in your shoes that I would do a mix of options. First off you can have people pre-purchase tickets like Stephanie suggested, and then I would say that you could sell them again at maybe 2 points throughout the night for 30 min each. I would be getting a BM or GM to do so, and you could always give them an extra drink ticket or two in return for them doing that Smiley smile

I would make a post on local bridal swap sites or on your facebook and see if anyone is interested. $100 a night is fair.

Yeah I get what you're saying.

I do not think I have anyone that would volunteer. But That is why I feel like it would be wasteful to hire someone. As I feel like everyone will buy a bunch at the start. And then they will just be sitting there forever waiting. Lol.

Oh well. I might just see if anyone knows someone who's willing to do it for $100 or something.

My venue refuses to handle any cash, as it is our liquor and our money.

And yes I agree. It just seems wasteful to have to pay someone minimum wage to sit there all night. As most people will buy a bunch at a time haha.

I think drink tickets are so much better! Allow someone to buy 10 for 20 bucks at the beginning instead of the guests having to deal with cash and change all night too (who even carries cash these days!)

Maybe see if your venue can get someone? Maybe they can bring in a second bar tender who can deal with the drink tickets only and then the other bartender actually deals out the drinks?

I think hiring someone would be much better than getting a family member to it! Like you said you don't want to spoil their fun and drink tickets can be a lot of work to manage!

I am doing the same! I was at a wedding where they had the dj do this, however, it was kind of annoying in the sense of trying to go up but everyone could see you. What I would do is see if you have any friend of a friends that could do it. Example my wedding a good friend of mine, her sister volunteered to help out. Would you have anyone that could do this? Or if you hire someone hire for cheaper rate then a bartender as they are sitting and selling only. Most people give a 20 and just take the tickets and when run out go up again. This is what most people did at weddings I went to.
