Length of time to allow for dinner

Derek, on September 3, 2022 at 01:21 Posted in Wedding reception 1 9
Our wedding is just over 3 weeks away. The reception is starting at 6:30 pm and is a sit-down buffet dinner. We want to allow time enough for everyone to eat, obviously, before starting speeches and proceeding to our first dance. I'm thinking that 1 1/2-2 hours should be sufficient, is this too long or short? Ideas?

We did a family style dinner, so everyone served themselves while remaining at the table. I only allowed about a hour for dinner and that seemed to be enough time. A lot of people filled up on appetizer too so I'm sure they were too full to eat all their dinner 😅 there was ALOT of food.

How many guests Amanda?? Our venue has indicated 2 hours for about 50 people. It has me concerned about the timeline so I keep trying to figure it out.

We are having it catered by the hotel's in-house restaurant (CHOP steakhouse). The venue hasn't given us any indications yet but we will be speaking to them as the date gets closer (have to finalize guest #'s etc).

Absolutely! It was definitely the right amount of time that our guests just weren't waiting around for things to happen.

This sounds like a reasonable amount of time to me. I just wanted to know what other people's experiences were.

Typically your banquet hall determines the length of dinner service. Have you talked to them about it? Most buffet service from a venue lasts two hours. If you're using an external caterer, that can be stretched out.

We had our dinner at 6pm with speeches at 730pm and our first dance at 745pm So it was about an hour and a half for our dinner and we had a buffet dinner as well
