Law of ordainment in ontario

Megs, on April 23, 2018 at 09:11 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 5
I have a quick question to ask of you all. My fiance and I want his best man to officiate our wedding. We want a very personal touch to our ceremony and would rather him than a stranger who doesn’t know us. Does any one know the rules in Ontario if they allow it or not?

My fiancé's sister had her uncle do the ceremony. Due to her hubby's busy schedule she didn't go to city hall before the wedding. So fun fact: their wedding was in August and they got married in September just at city hall. That was for the office part. So you can do it separate really, having an official officiant there just means when you sign that exact day you're married. Depends on how fussy you are I guess.

I personally will be married by someone who CN do it by law, but I'm not a fan of stopping during the ceremony to sign so ill probably do it in private either sometime before or after the wedding.

An official officiant/minister still needs to sign the paper and be there for the ceremony, but it can be preformed by your best man.

K believe it is still that if you have someone who is not registered with the government do it then you still need to hire an approved officiant/judge/minister etc to be present and sign the papers. If a non official person signs the papers it is not legal.

We had our friend perform our ceremony but we had to have an officiant in attendance to make it legal (she witnessed the ceremony, made the pronouncement of marriage and signed the papers). There is no issue with having someone you know perform the ceremony but someone who can make it all legal also needs to be around and sign off on things.

Last I knew is if you have someone in your family that is a judge/minister that would be in attendance, they could sign off on the paperwork then you could have friend do the ceremony. but I don't know if that has changed. (I know someone that did this...but it was like 7 or 8 years ago)
