Is it to much to ask ?

Kaitlyn, on December 13, 2017 at 11:29 Posted in Ontario 0 11

My Fiance and I live in Oshawa however we plan to have our wedding in Sault Ste Marie ( 8 hour drive ) ... we are struggling with the travel for people .. do we book a coach bus approx $8k and have the cost split among the 56 guests making the journey.. do we allow people to find there own way .. do we some how find a way to reserve flights and see if we ca get a discount of group rate ? also the hotel cost for people as we are thinking of having our guest stay for 3 nights at hotel .. is this insane to ask of people ??

All weddings I have been to, they provide a block of rooms for family members who are driving a large distance to attend the wedding, and then one of the parents who live locally have a BBQ at their house the next afternoon before everyone goes back home. Or have everyone meet up at a restaurant for brunch? It helps to make people feel welcomed and not that they drove hours and hours for a 4 or 5 hour event.

We are having our wedding in London, ON and people are coming from Whitby, Ottawa, Lindsay, Barrie, really from all over Ontario, even from Nova Scotia. We have offered them several places to stay and have suggested different modes of transportation but we ultimately left the decision up to them.

Our wedding is not nearly as far as that but we do have a lot of our of town guests. Our venue is about an hour away in good traffic. We are planning to block a hotel for guests that want to stay. My future mother in law said we have to pay for a bus to drive our guests from our city to the venue but that is not happening. You in no way have to pay for their travels, you're paying for their dinner and possibly their drinks for the whole night too so don't in anyway feel obligated to pay for them to travel too.

This sounds like our wedding! Except that we are having a majority of our guests travel from Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay which is 8 hours away. It's not typically your job to cover these expenses to have these people at your wedding. We have rooms blocked off in our hotel with a discounted rate for them to book but they area all paying their on travel and hotel. Unless there are certain people that you absolutely want there for your wedding that can't afford to pay for these things, the guests cover the costs. It's considered a destination wedding at this point.

Makes sense. I would say 2 days; people probably wont want to take Friday AND Monday off from work!

We were thinking if the drive is 8 hours they would arrive at hotel Friday, have Saturday for a day to relax weddig Sunday and leave for home Monday but I think we will have the wedding Saturday so this would be a 2 night stay instead

Half our guests will be from Chicago/farther and we are not covering anything. It is also an 8 hour drive. I think this is super doable; people can carpool, split gas costs. Etc. Im confused though... Why do you need guests to stay for three nights/how is this working?

Agreed. Plan the bus and give the option to people, but I dont think you need to pay for it.

I would arrange for something for family members - maybe speak with your parents and if you have a lot of relatives coming, perhaps a family bus would be appreciated. You don't need to do anything, but any help with organization would totally be appreciated!

Like Erin said, you are not obligated to book travel arrangements for your guests. If you want some information about choosing great hotel room blocks we have a few articles you might want to check - Reserving Hotel Blocks, Guest Accommodations

You are not obliged to cover the travel costs for your guests. We had our wedding 3 hours away from where we live and our guests were responsible for their own travel plans and costs and lodging expenses. You can reserve a block of rooms at a hotel near your venue and that usually give a discounted rate to your guests but you don't have to pay for it.
