Is it a good or bad idea to do forest engagement photos if you're planning on getting married in a forest?

TaylorB, on May 5, 2021 at 23:41 Posted in Before the wedding 0 6

Hi everyone!

I am newly engaged and trying to plan out my engagement photos for late spring/early summer.

The area I am looking at is a bluffs area with a beach AND a forest. My fiance and I have already decided we definitely want to be married in a forest surrounded by trees and nature. My original thought was if we do the bluffs for our engagement photos it will tie into our Celtic forest wedding theme nicely, but now I am second guessing it and thinking if we do a part of our engagement shoot in the forest that maybe it'll look too similar to our wedding photos.. what do you guys think?

If your photographer is up for it, I would do a few engagement shots in each setting. That way you've got the variety, but your engagement photos will also match your wedding vibe. You might lose a few minutes of shooting time to walk/travel to the different areas, but it could be super worth it!

We had fall engagement photos and a fall wedding. I was worried the photos would be too similar but they ended up looking quite different. The leaves this year turned early and a windy September knocked them off super early, so we didn't get that riot of orange and yellow in our wedding pictures. Plus our photographer picked a few spots with different natural settings so even our wedding photos don't look like they were all taken on the same day within 1km.

I personally love nature to and I really can’t get enough of it but I would say do another aspect of nature like a water scenery so it won’t take away from your epic day

I never thought of this, but it's a good point, now you've got me thinking. I was hoping to do our wedding photos in a forest area so now I'm reconsidering my options for engagement photo locations

I would maybe try and have your engagement photos at a different location then where you're getting married. Do you really want to look back at photos of your wedding and engagement and have them very similar. But, if that's where you want to have your photos taken, then go for it. No one is telling you, you can't. You can do whatever you want!!

I knew I wanted our wedding photos to be foresty so we intentionally didn’t do that for our engagement photos. But you’re going to be dressed in very different clothing so even if the setting is similar there’s going to be a big difference between the photos.

Nothing particularly good or bad about it. The only negative would be if you want to have a variety of settings in your photo collection for the future but if you like the forest, then take photos in the forest. Nothing wrong with that.

I wouldn't worry about the photos looking the same. Dress up differently (have him not wear a similar suit to the one he'll get married in) and use different parks/wooded areas with different tree lines, different bodies of water (pick a pond/river/lake not surrounded by a beach to differentiate from the Bluffs), find different amenities, etc.
