Invitations are turning into a nightmare..

Kelsie, on January 8, 2020 at 20:33 Posted in Before the wedding 0 13

Hey WW!

Need some advice from all of you lovely people.

I've been excited about ordering my invites for a loooong time - I'm using a lady who did my mom's wedding invites a few years ago. I met with her a year ago and she was pleasant and super informative and she told me to come back in a year.

My FH and I met with her and picked out stationary, some fonts, colours, etc. to try out for her to design some proofs for us. We paid 50% down in cash and we were told we'd have the invite proofs to review the following week (the week of New Years).

We've gotten nothing - zip, zilch, nada - zero.

I've followed up by email twice - got a response saying she would "make the correction" (our hotel spelled our names wrong for the hotel code guests use) and that's it. That was Monday.

I got my FH to email her yesterday asking when we can expect the invitation proofs (because hello we want to get our order in) - still nothing.

I'm getting pretty pissed off to be honest - you took my money and I haven't even gotten the proofs yet - never mind a draft mock up or the actual order and I need the invites done by the end of February (and her stationary all comes from abroad).

I was thinking tomorrow I'd place a stern phone call and if I still have no response I'm going to go in on Saturday very pissed off.

What do you all think? Am I overreacting? She's a nice lady and did my mom's stuff - has good reviews on Google but it's like WTF!

Sadly, I've called, emailed, left voicemails and it is an extremely slow process. I'm usually a fairly patient person but it grinds my gears because I actually went and saw her with my FH last summer and she said to wait until December. I never would have waited this long to do my invites if I had it my way.

She's very unresponsive. I'm basically designing my own invites at this point with her sending my proofs off to another company to print.

I want to ask for some money back - what do you think? How much should I ask for? Or should I save my sanity and not bother?

I can't even begin to talk about how mad I am. Once I finally got the proofs I didn't like, I sent her an email with changes - didn't hear from her for 3 days. I followed up saying she can send the proofs to me in Word and I'll do them myself. That took another 2 days, with a phone call and voicemail.

Then she didn't send one of the proofs at all, sent me someone else's proofs. It's a nightmare.

Luckily my thought process is never to book someone for other things until I've worked with them. So she won't be getting any of my business going forward and I'll definitely be posting a negative review on Google and WeddingWire once my invitations are in hand.

I got my bridal shower invites from Zazzle which I love so for simple invites, thank you cards going forward I'll use them. The wedding invites are more complex than I could do on Zazzle so I needed to use a stationary company but I never imagined it would be this bad.

I'm sorry your stationary lady is being a pain and hope things work out Kelsie!

Super frustrating that you had to fight to get proofs and now you're not too happy with them, but hopefully your phone call lit the fire under her.

I would also post a honest review once you are done dealing with her. Hopefully it's not a case where she goes and deletes not-so-good reviews, but this way, you are informing other brides about your experience. Are you also using her for anything else, like thank you cards, place cards? If so you may want to consider dropping her for those projects.

    Thanks for the support Tori!

I never want to come across rude or unreasonable but when I pay a vendor and they don’t communicate with me at all - I get mad fast!
I ended up calling her and she sent me proofs almost immediately - I didn’t like any of them. It all feels very slapped together and it’s just frustrating.

I'm glad you got something but it's too bad you aren't thrilled by any of the proofs. Hopefully this has lit a fire under her and she will get you something you love very soon.

    UPDATE:

I called her and she was definitely caught off guard that I was calling her. Now I have 3 proofs in my email box, all of a sudden "she was free" to work on them. It just feels very sloppy and I don't really like any of the proofs so FH will have to talk about this tonight but at least its moving.

    Thanks for the support ladies!

Man, I read it all and then the comments so I'm up to date - but for real??? Like... at this point I would probably be on the phone with her and explain that you need all of the ACTUAL invitations ready to be sent out by February 29th LATEST. I assume she already knows that but sometimes when you bring it up then they can go over how long it would take to get everything in and whatnot and calculate if it would be a problem or not. If she said it might be even a week later then that I would say that then we have a problem. We were supposed to get the the proofs weeks ago and because she is running so behind now it's not possible to get them in time and that I would want my money back if she can't put a rush order on it.

At the same time I really don't put up with very much so I have a bit of a short fuse for things like that. It's how I found most of my vendors - who can respond and do their job?? And then also how I determined the tips... I don't tip unless they did their job plus some. We have a good min. wage and everything here in MB so if they want a tip they better do their job and do it good!

Hopefully it all works out with this lady though so that you can get the invitations you want as well as less of a headache Smiley atonished

The company we looked at had great reviews as well. Maybe shes just super busy?

The jerk part of me just read your message and thought I want my money back. Don't tell me you are going to have something done and then not even apologize or own up for your mistake.
And yes respond! I run a small martial arts club and I always, always make an effort to respond to all my students/potential students within 24 hours (48 if it's email as inquiries come through there and are usually more lengthy). No one is that busy all the time!

It’s so weird cause my mom really liked her; she has great reviews - I just don’t know what’s going on.

She got back to my FH asking us to come in and review next weekend ...and we can’t. Just crazy no heads up or anything unless we ask 4 times.
She hasn’t even started on the proofs which is annoying. UGHHH stress!!
Some vendors ignored me when we were super early on in the planning process so I’m sadly not surprised some of them left you on read Smiley sad it’s so annoying! At least respond!!

I'd wait and see if you hear anything by Saturday and then go in for sure. The fact that you have paid half already would make me upset as well. Thankfully, she isnt someone you have to deal with the day of the wedding like a MUA/hairdresser otherwise I would be questioning if I wanted to keep them.

I'm floored how many people I've come across with poor customer service/communication. I messaged someone on fb (relatively new, no website) as a potential videographer back in...November? They "read" my message almost immediately and I didnt get as much as a "thank you for your interest, I will be in touch soon." I don't chase people; I shouldn't have to chase you to give you my money 🤷‍♀️. I went with someone else.

Thanks Meaghan - I never want to come across nagging or unreasonable but all I'm really looking for is some communication from her. Even if she emailed saying she can't get to it this week - not a big deal but just tell me!!

I'm just starting to get aggravated now lol

I think your plan sounds very reasonable. It never feels good to be left in the lurch, not knowing if a vendor is going to follow through, and they have the money.

I'm sorry, Kelsie, that really sucks. I hope she gets those invites to you asap.
