Insurance on your engagement ring?

Meaghan, on December 20, 2019 at 01:25 Posted in WeddingWire 0 11
Hey,

I recently got engaged and I've been reading some blogs about insuring the ring. Have you all done so? I know it did cost quite a few bucks so I'd like to have your own opinions/experiences before doing anything.
TIA! Smiley smile

Oh man I am so paranoid that I will lose this ring. I checked out Jewelers Mutual and it is so straight forward and isn't as expensive as I thought it would be. I forgot to bring the appraisal certificate with me today, so I'll complete it after Christmas.

We got insurance through Jewelers Mutual, which was the company recommended to us through James Allen which is where the ring is from. It covers the replacement cost for basically every reason (theft, loss, damage) and we just pay one yearly fee, I can't remember how much but the price will depend on how much you are insuring. If your ring was a big investment and something you wear everyday insurance may be worth considering.

I was wondering about this too. My fiance and I don't live together as of yet, so unable to insurance under a renters/home owners plan. Are there other options?

I had initially put mine on our home insurance however it did not cover loss or if a stone fell out. I switched to Jewelers Mutual which was the same price but covers theft, loss, missing stones, and all damage. My fiancé bought my ring on James Allen and it’s connected to his account so all information is there if anything were to happen

Our wedding bands were offered with insurance/size plan if anything happened. Time of pick up wasn't mentioned and size had to be smaller which cost us a lot. I did however got the plan in case I ever need to resize the ring on top. Better to know its available when needed.

Congrats! I have jewelry included in my renters insurance up to $5000 per piece if its above that ill add it as a separate valuable. (This also covers you for losing it as well. As a separate valuable)

    Congratulations!

We added mine to our home insurance policy as a valuable. They needed a copy of the appraisal from the jeweler. I don't think our premiums changed at all.
I breathed a high sigh of relief once we had it added to the insurance. Before that I was so paranoid that I would lose it!

Congratulations on your engagement! What does your ring look like?

I have wondered the same thing you have about ring insurance. I haven't gone any further than that though. Ultimately I've decided not to because if anything did happen to it, while it would present some financial stress, it isn't so expensive that we couldn't get me a new ring out of pocket. So for me that risk is manageable without the insurance. I think if the value of the ring exceeded what we could cover if necessary, I might choose differently.

Another factor to consider is how you wear your ring. I keep mine on all the time, unless I'm baking or doing something messy. The risk of mine being lost or stolen is negligible. If you take yours off more frequently then that risk increases and that might also factor into your analysis.
I think ultimately it comes down to your comfort level with the risk. If you are worried about it then the peace of mind you get from having insurance alone might be worth the premiums.
PS - nice to have a name twin here!
