How much control are you giving your DJ over the reception playlist?

Sinéad, on December 20, 2019 at 09:05 Posted in Wedding reception 0 13

How much musical control are you giving your DJ? Are you giving them free rein to play what they want? After all, they are the professionals!

Do you have some definite ‘must play songs’ along with a list of ‘do not play’ ones? Or have you decided to give your DJ a comprehensive playlist of everything you want to be played?

We gave our DJ lots of control of the playlist, only had a few must-play and do-not-play songs!

We're skipping the DJ to save money. But I definitely have a list of songs that we need to dance to!

Our DJ was amazing. He had a playlist based off of what we didn't want, and then we gave him genres that we liked.
He played great music all night

We'll give ours a list of small list of do-play and don't play songs but they'll have free reign otherwise. They know music better than we do.

I’m not sure about this yet. Our DJ is one my FH has worked with so much in the past so he trusts him but I’m worried about the mix of disco polo and regular music so I probably need to meet with him once to discuss lol

The DJ knows what our style of music is and the vibe we want to create, so for the most part they are in control. We have a list of a few songs that are must haves, and there are definitely songs that we do not want played at all!

No control! lol we're not having a DJ. We're just making a playlist on Spotify for each part of the wedding ceremony/reception and our friends that are emceeing the wedding are taking care of making sure the right music is playing at the right time. We're also adding a "Song Request" line on our RSVP cards so there'll be something played that everyone likes. I'm also making sure that the playlist has slow song breaks at proper times, so it's not just on shuffle.

We gave our DJ a list of songs we highly recommend but other than that we were open to guests requesting songs (with the exception of no country music!). Only problem was that she was telling our guests that we said "no rap type of music" which was completely false and was HER only stipulation for DJing.... Just blame it on the Bride and Groom.... okay...

I will be giving them full control. They are the experts and I just want everyone dancing enjoying themselves. I'm going to let him do his thing. We will give a few songs. But not to many.

We've given them a list of songs that we like, some are must plays and some are suggestions. We have given our DJ also a listen of do not play genres and artists so I trust they'll abide by that. We'll let the DJ play their choice of songs that are similar to our suggestions but because I am a Paranoid Polly I gave the DJ a hard no on letting guests request songs.

I'll give her my first dance song and I have told her what kind of music we like. As long as I don't have to hear Celine Dion I'm fine. I just want fun songs to get people on the dance floor.

Probably won't give them too much direction - like your posts says, they're the professional! Will likely just tell them what our "vibe" is, and what we and our guests would most like to hear. I've been compiling a list on Spotify of songs that I would like to play, so I'll probably give that to the DJ and tell them "you can play them whenever you want, just scan the room to make sure I'm here to hear it!!"
