I am making, doing and pay for everything myself. I took on a lot more and was a little overwhelmed without any assistance.
I designed the invitations, hand wrote the welcome packages, designed the website -in 3 languages, 40 trips to Michael's and the dollar store, made 2 wedding card boxes one for shower one for the wedding, making the book for people to sign, centrepieces, I wrote biographies on all the guests with pictures which we will hand out on the plane (as we are doing destination wedding and nobody knows each other including the families), wrote icebreaker on all the guests for them to get to know each other at the brunch the following day , developed a signature cocktail and typed it out in Spanish and English and bought the two sided frames at Ikea for each of the bars at the resort, I am in the process of obtaining 50 oyster shells and hand painting the names of all the guest and tying a ribbon as name plates for each name tag. I painted a cork board white and bought a map of the world and each person will be sitting at a country vs. a table number. On the table its history of the country, a picture of us from that country and the passport stamp. I hand painted fans which will be handed out to guests at the ceremony. I am also doing playlists for the ceremony, the dinner, the dancing. I am also doing fitness classes each day at the resort so I did a playlist for this. I do have OCD and I am type A and a Planner/Designer/Project Manager for a living -just not weddings. I am also making chandeliers for each table. I am Also hand painting a lot of signs including chalkboard. As we met on Plenty of Fish....I have a fish bowl which I decorated, coloured stones in our wedding colours and buying 2 gold fish when I arrive in our destination. To represent two less fish in the sea-cheesy I know: LOL this will be for our sweetheart table or the table where guests sign the book. I am then giving it to a local to bring home to their child.
As they walk in the reception each person will be given a homemade airline ticket and they have to find out what country they will be "travelling to" . They then find it on the "map" and then proceed to their country. As our theme is travel which will be incorporated throughout. From the time the guests greet each other at the airport to the meet and greet, to the ceremony, reception etc.
I did have one epic fail...I bought toasting glasses at the dollar store 4 of them in case we broke on the travel. I bought twine, sea shells and special glue. After 3 attempts to glue and adhere the twine to the stem of the glasses, I threw them out. The twine would not stick to the stem, the glasses were all smeared and covered with glue where they should not be and it could not be removed. I saw them for $80 USD plus a hefty shipping and duty tax and wanted to do it myself cheaper. $16 glasses, $10 twine, and 3 different types of special glue, $15-20 I through out the glasses, had glue stuck to my hands which peeled layers of skin off for days and the twine would not even stay tight and came off. SO I gave up nice drinking glasses.
I am also making brigaderios (chocolate truffles) and transporting it for the wedding day for special traditional dessert in addition to wedding cake/fruit. So trying to do everything ourselves some things worked some didn't some are still in the process and some I have not started yet.
I am making the ring bearer pillow as I did not want to pay $40 for something I did not like that was satin or heart shaped or too frilly for me. I cannot sew to save my life but I bought the stuffing, cover, burlap, lace, seashells, coloured burlap for bow, ribbon, special rope to edge it and taking it to a seamstress to sew for me.
We are doing it our way and paying for every aspect of the wedding from the dinner plates to cocktail reception, wedding dress, flights etc.. So this way we don't get push back. Some of the things in my head I want to design / do have not been done before so this has been a challenge as I cannot show anyone examples of follow a picture.
Hard part will be the wedding day since I cannot be there to set it up how I want it so have to let go control. My 8 colleagues are attending and in the same profession so I delegate to them my vision and they can assist
You're a frugal bride just like I am! Good score on the fabric! I've found lots of things at thrift shops and varage sale. If you have freecycle out there, you can become a member and ask for stuff. I got some tiny lights and a bunch of fall leaves for free just by asking if anyone had this to give away. The only thing about freecycle is they want you to offer things first before you ask for items. I can understand that.
Love this discussion so many talented people. So many good ideas. We plan on making the majority of things vs. buying them or looking into varage sale/kijiji for second hand items. I already found a bride and groom cake topper of snoopy not sure if it will be the cake topper or not but it will be something. I have also gone to a discount fabric store and got discounted fabric on top of discount to pay 75.00 for over 30 meters of purple, purple and white, and white sheer fabric to add to our tent decor.

Centerpieces, bouquets, isle runner, head table runner, twine balls, drink buckets, drink menu on a DIY chalk board. Probably doing more tbh. I love DIY
I am very crafty, and my FH is great at taking directions to help me mass produce items. I/We are making our own flower girl baskets, table runners, centerpieces, table numbers, cake and dessert stands.
I am also making the cupcakes for the cupcake tree as well as a small cake for cutting.
I'm making a veil, but not too sure if I'll wear it.
I'm also working on mass producing my own thank-you cards for the showers and for the wedding gifts!

I'm doing my own centerpieces a cross between these two:
1. Centerpieces - I cut down a bunch or branches in my parents yard, dried and spray painted them silver. Then put each branch in a square vase (off amazon) and decorated the branch with fairy lights (I wrapped the lights around the branch - starting at the top and working my way down - i used to light packs per branch). I also added red flowers (my wedding colour) to the vase to hide the battery packs for the lights.
2. Window sign - printed off the lettering/ images I wanted on the window taped them to the back of the window (with the text facing so I could see it on the other side) then traced everything with a chalk marker. This turned out better than expected.
3. Table chart - same principle as the window but with an acrylic sheet (home depot). I just followed the instructions here: http://somethingturquoise.com/2016/04/29/diy-hand-lettered-acrylic-wedding-signs/
4. Flowers - the day before the wedding we are having a bouquet party where we will be pulling flowers from my mom and mother in laws gardens as well as some fillers from the local green house to make the bouquets (I'm also trying my hand at boutonnieres for the boys)
I have quite a few items that I will be doing myself!
I plan to do all the flowers (bouquets, boutonnieres, centerpieces) myself, as well as other elements to the centerpieces (candles, pumpkins). I did the invitations using an Etsy template, and I'll be doing the escort cards, favours, table numbers, and How Well Do you Know the Bride and Groom game paper crafts. I also bought chalkboard signs and will be using those as decoration.
My date is a Friday, so we plan to go the night before and decorate the venue with the flowers, tulle, and string lights. The venue is providing chair/table covers and coordinated napkins so don't have to do that part!
I'm crafty in general, but I love the idea of a personal touch.
So, I have now decided that I'm going to make my own wedding cake. One lovely bride made me aware that there are people in the older group (and I'm included in that group at age 58) who shouldn't be eating sugary deserts due to medical conditions like diabetes. I'm a pretty good baker so I watched YouTube videos on how to make a simple tiered wedding cake with buttercream icing and ribbons and flowers for decorations. It will be sugar free except for the icing. I better get practicing!!
The only thing that we are doing on our own is our invitations. But even then we ordered a template from Etsy. It's just cheaper to buy your own paper and envelopes and print them yourselves.
I will be making things! Super excited about my cricut arriving shortly. We'll be doing invitations, custom shirts, cake topper, vinyls for the menu and program (on a mirror or picture frame instead of each person having one that gets thrown out), escort cards, and anything else i can think of. I also have plans for centrepieces and my mom is making my veil probably.

I made my table numbers, and I am also making the centerpieces myself. We are having a florist do the flowers for the centerpieces but I am doing the rest. We are also have jam as our favours, and I am making the labels and decorating the jars with twine and burlap myself. I also have several other decor elements that I have been gifted or have bought myself that we are going to place around the venue!
I've made our bouquets using a Styrofoam ball and dollar store flowers. They turned out gorgeous. For the centrepieces I hunted down heavy crystal vases from thrift shops and Varagesale ($3.00 to $5.00). They will be placed on round mirrors (purchased from Varage sale) and I'll be putting Costco roses (2 dozen for $21.00) in them along with some fake fall leaves and greenery. I bought an arbour to put together and decorate with flowers and tulle. The top will have a long fall centrepiece purchased at Value Village for $2.99. I also bought glass tealight holders (24 for $7.00) from Varage sale which were spray painted gold. I'll put some extra gold glitter on each one.
I'm doing DIY centerpieces! Our wedding theme is "travel/journey" so making hot airballoons as centerpieces. Also thinking about DIY-ing my own back drop as well bought sheer curtains from IKEA for very good price. Now just figuring out if I need to buy the stand or make that as well
I am making invitations (Cricut is my best friend), the bouquets and boutonnieres, centre pieces and wedding favours. It's to cut costs, but also to make everything more personalized and sentimental....and any excuses to make crafts.
Hi Hailey, How is the planning going so far? That is so nice! Did you check our DIY group? I made some discussions that I think you will like: 10 Alternative Wedding Ring Cushions. Also the other brides to-be have some great ideas: Diy flower girl basket - Alternative wedding pillow for a beach wedding - Dyi everything. . What did you have in mind making?
I created and printed our invatations myself, fun project (with help from a kit)... Our next big DIY is napkins... I really want cloth napkins but they are so expensive... My MIL and I are going to make them out of secondhand sheets, huge savings $40 for around 200.
I made the flowers for me and my MH and MY FH and his best man and for the man who is walking me down the aisle. I made the flowers for Our centrepieces and made the flowers for the chairs. Made our Cupcake tower and our Wedding favours. The rest will be done by my Wedding planner. I made our Wedding toasting Glasses with Glow paints. I made Glitter Trees.
I think I have convinced my dad to make MR and MRS wooden signs for us for the sweetheart table and my FH and I are making paper cranes to go into the flowers and onto the table and maybe in some vases. I just kind of want then a little bit of everywhere. We aren't planning on doing the traditional 1000 cranes but I would like them around. Other than that the decor is pretty much low table centerpeices and some candles the venue provides.
We are thinking of making crepe paper flowers to put around the hall for some added decor. I'm also thinking of making fake candle sticks to hang from the ceiling above the dance floor (like in the grand hall where they eat dinner in Harry Potter) but haven't completely decided on that yet. We are also going to make the favors ourselves as well The invitations and other signs around the hall will be downloadable versions that we edit ourselves.
