Does anyone from North Carolina know the legal process for getting married in another country?

They are not always recognized. There is a process to go through to have them recognized. From the states and the UK its usually fine, but its not a guaranteed process for anyone... It depends on personal circumstances so I would recommend anyyyyyone to speak with a lawyer about it.

Hey Kaitlin. I'm a law student (working in an immigration firm) and my FH is an immigration attorney in Chicago.

We are eloping in Illinois in Feb, but having our wedding in Ontario 1.5 years later.

There are a lot of things to consider here... I would recommend going to see an immigration lawyer in Canada to have these questions answered. Most lawyers will do a free consultation.

Where do you plan on living? is your FH planning on sponsoring you to come here? are you moving back to NC? Depending on your answers to these Qs I can give you some decent advice from my POV as a Canadian marrying an American lol.

Thanks! Yes, from NC and eloping in Canada. Seems like all we need is our IDs for the marriage license.

Hi Kaitlin, are you from North Carolina and getting married in Canada? Are you American? This is something you should check out with the area in which you're marrying, but if you're legally married in one country your marriage is recognized in other countries. My British husband married me in the US and our marriage is still recognized in the UK, or Canada, or any other country we might visit.
