How did you and your fiancé(e) decide on a honeymoon destination?

Cliodhna, on November 21, 2019 at 09:05 Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

The honeymoon options are endless, from staycations to getting off somewhere far away! With so much choice, how did you decide?!

Did you pick a place neither of you have visited before? Did you let your future spouse decide? Did your budget, interests, or vacation time heavily influence your decision?

We decided on a Caribbean destination versus anywhere else because we seriously need time to relax! All-inclusive was an obvious choice for us, we have gone to the DR before and loved it.

Then we chose which brand of hotel we wanted to go with, we opted for Sandals. Originally, we were going to go to two different islands (Grenada and somewhere else), however, we figured we'd be losing a day just travelling between the two islands and it got costly and more complicated.

St. Lucia is one island where Sandals has 3 different resorts to choose from. We ended up picking the 2 we liked best and we're going to take a Sandals shuttle between them.

So it's much of the same for two weeks but different scenery!

We had decided that we wanted to go on a cruise for our honeymoon, but didn't have our heart set on going anywhere in particular. We knew we wanted to sail out on the Monday after our wedding and return on the Friday or Saturday so we started with looking online to see what was available for those dates. Then we looked at the boats for each cruise and prices to decide on a cruise to the Bahamas.

So to us priority went: available dates > cost > big boat with lots of activities> Destination

Requiring an LGBT friendly destination helped us weed some of our options down to the most accepting (that last thing I wanted was weird looks or staring during our honeymoon)
Then we both agreed that we wanted a little culture, a little scenery and a little relaxing which lead us to Malta! We can explore the whole country is a couple of days and relax the rest of the time!

We went on a cruise in the Caribbean. We got engaged in Miami Beach before a Caribbean cruise and really enjoyed it, so it seemed fitting to do it again for our honeymoon, only with different stops on the cruise.

I've always longed for a Mediterranean cruise and that seemed like a great honeymoon choice. FH's favourite place in the world is Germany, and we both loves castles so we planned a short week driving around Bavaria looking at castles and drinking wine and then we both fell in love with a Instagram post of Villa Honegg in Switzerland. So we combined the three for an epic honeymoon.

This is what I think we are leaning towards too. I think after Christmas we'll hit a travel agent so they can help us decide what will be best. For us a cruise sounds great because we have the kids (who have to come) and cruises have great day camps we can put them in to have a little actual honeymoon time...

Budget was a big factor when deciding where to go, and we really wanted a vacation right after the wedding to relax and take it in that we're finally married and not just go right back to work after. But after looking at what the wedding is going to cost, we just couldn't rationalize spending even more for what most vacations cost. Plus FH's anxiety ramps up at airports and while flying, and that was the last thing I wanted to put him through for our honeymoon. So we decided staying closer to home was the best option, and we love camping and cottage country so we just rented a huge cottage on a remote part of the lake in Muskoka and don't have to see another soul if we don't want to for an entire week. Plus, it allows pets so we can bring our little pup too!

First we decided that it wasn't possible for us to go anywhere right after the wedding as we both had to go back to work - so then we figured we would do a mini-moon here in the city.

From there we knew that we wanted a real honeymoon but needed time to figure out finances and see about getting time off work - so now we are planning a cruise for maybe December! As for where we want to go; we just want to go somewhere warm and the reason for the cruise is that we both have never been on one and it would be making stops at more than one place Smiley smile
