Hiring Servers for a "self-catered" wedding

Jessica, on October 18, 2017 at 07:17 Posted in Wedding reception 0 6

One of my partners dreams for his wedding, is to have his mother cater the wedding. It's been something his mom and he have dreamed about before they even met me. This is so important it's going to dictate the location of the event, so I want the details ironed out around it before I do anything else.

She's an amazing cook, and she's done home catering for a number of large groups before, so I have no problem having her cook. However, her normal catering crew is her extended family, all of whom I want to be enjoying the party and not manning the stations. I know my mother-in-law to be will be fluttering in and out of the kitchen even if I hired a caterer, but I would like to hire her some servers and buffet attendants to keep everyone well fed but still allow her to enjoy herself.

So far, I haven't seen catering companies that only hire out their staff. Is this normal? Do I need to budget time to interview and hire a small group of servers on my own, because the catering is self-done, or is there a different type of service that does this? Our wedding will be on Vancouver Island, if anyone happens to know any off-hand.

What about high school or university culinary programs?? Often they are looking for events to get experience and dont charge too much Smiley smile
Im in the same situation... My mom and her husband will be making the food for our wedding but we will be hiring day of servers. Ive had a couple family friends volunteer but we will also be looking at hiring some students to help out as well.

Maybe try placing an add somewhere like kijiji or in the newspaper? I agree, you don't want to feel like you're making your family work the day of the wedding.

Definitely, call the different catering companies in your area. Just because it's not an option on their website doesn't mean they don't do it. They may not be able to do it on the date of your wedding because they need the staff for their own events. If they say they can't/don't do it, ask them if they know of where you could possibly find people (worth asking). The other suggestions mentioned above are also a good place to ask and if there are cooking/hospitality schools in your area, they likely have students who would love some experience for a more reasonable fee.

You could see if a local restaurant would be ok with lending out some of their staff. You could also try other types of industries that serving stuff such as retirement homes, the Legion, community centres, churches etc.

I would contact the catering companies or event companies in your area and see if you can book staff only for your event. If not then you may want to see if any family friends know people who work in the service industry that are willing to serve at your wedding.
