Help! Can't find a caterer!

Emma, on November 26, 2020 at 12:27 Posted in Wedding reception 0 11

So, like many others, we have had to cancel our destination wedding and are moving it to home as a backyard wedding in September (10 months away). Every caterer in my area is booked that day and I am considering pulling off the dinner ourselves with family style service. We have 36 guests and 4 tables total. Does anyone have experience doing this? Any tips and tricks? I am trying not to be too overwhelmed about it. My mom is a professional chef but is already doing the cake and I hate to burden my family with dinner too as I want them to relax as well. Any recommendations? I'm so lost and moving my date is not an option as it is very significant in our family and I will not postpone for a variety of family and personal reasons.

What if you took the cake burden off of your mom by shopping for a bakery and asking her (and others if possible) to take care of the food instead of the cake?

I would ask your mom how she feels about the idea of changing what she's helping with and go from there!

This makes me feel better! Basically all our wedding is DIY so my mom and I have both taken the week of the wedding off and I think my wedding party is taking the couple days before off to help too, so there will be spare hands! Thanks!

My friends mom is a chef, and helped with all the food at her wedding. It saved a LOT of money and it was less guests then you are mentioning here. I think the biggest thing was prep. The few days before it was all hands on deck (or as many as could be) to help chop and prep items, and then there were a couple helpers (so it didn't all just fall on her) to know when to pop things into the oven and put things out, etc. It definitely can be done! I hope everything works out! Looking forward to seeing an update!

No problem! Because no one should have to chop onions on the day of their wedding hahaha

No hotels with restaurants within an hour drive, but I really enjoy your suggestion of them prepping so we can pop the food in! I do have the fridge space so I could pick everything up ahead of time. Thanks Hank!!

Even if they give it to you uncooked and it's something you just pop in the oven without any of the prep, that will take massive work of your and your family's shoulders.

Perhaps a hotel kitchen? Are there any hotels with room service or in-house restaurants near you? Maybe they could cater it?

We don't have grocery options like that here unfortunately, and I considered food trucks, but my FH is set on a more formal meal.

I will definitely look into some restaurants, however there are only 2 in my town, that's why I am trying to work out logistics of doing it myself. Thanks for the suggestion!

Definitely check restaurants but also the higher end grocery chains like Metro or Longos as they have catering menus as well that can be set in platters that would be conducive to family style. If you don't mind something more casual, maybe food trucks?

Have you checked with local restaurants to see if they might be able to offer some sort of catering option?
