Groom with Anxiety - Ideas

Sarah, on August 30, 2019 at 16:49 Posted in Wedding reception 0 6

Working around my fiances anxiety during the photos and reception will be tough, we have a few tricks up our sleeve such as essential oils, our flower choice is lavender and possibly a beer or two. Does anyone else have issues being the center of attention - how do you deal? any suggestions?

thanks!

Total social anxiety over here too. My biggest advice is just to remember why you're doing it and keep calm. Tell your FH that this is a special day and it's going to be just fine.

I love your ideas for keeping him calm tho!

I also have social anxiety. I would suggest identifying a place for him to step aside to and take a breather when he is being overwhelmed such as maybe an outside patio or a bathroom or bridal suite.i just had my jack and Jill this weekend and a few times I had to step away into the kitchen just to take a breath and gather my thoughts for a couple minutes.

When mingling with people at the wedding you could have a code word/ signal (ex. He taps your shoulder) letting you know he’s overwhelmed and you know to usher yourselves away from the situation.

as others have suggested, mindfulness is useful. Get him to focus on his senses when he’s feeling overwhelmed. He can identify and focus on 4 things he can see, 3 things he can feel, 2 things he can smell.

For my anxiety I find that isolating myself away from a large group and then grounding myself by naming things in the room and where I am help calm my nerves.

I have awful social anxiety. I personally smoke a little weed to keep calm. Obviously not at work or anything but it's totally acceptable for a party situation. Specifically indica to remain calm. I definitely prefer it to alcohol. But its obviously not for everyone.

I am very socially anxious and dislike being the centre of attention. I can tolerate it but it takes a lot out of me.
This isn't a short term solution, but I have benefited from mindfulness and a regular meditation and yoga practice. I know that sounds silly, but it is incredibly grounding and has benefitted me immensely.
There is lots of good research into the benefits of mindfulness for anxiety disorders.

My FH isn’t big on being the center of attention either. But during that day I will just try to keep him focused on us and close family instead of the bigger group.
Make sure to take time just the 2 of you as much as you can between the activities so he can focus
