Getting Ready Photos?

Sheila, on January 8, 2019 at 13:10 Posted in Before the wedding 0 8

Hi all!

I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the classic "getting ready" pictures? Is there anyone who skipped them and regretted it? Or skipped them and it turned out fine? I was thinking it may be a good way to shave off a few hours of the photographer (and second shooter if they're doing the guys in a different location). It seems that it's pretty standard lately, so I'm just wondering what people think about skipping it altogether?

I'd love some cute pictures with me and my girls getting ready...but we all have phones don't we?

Thanks for all the tips - super helpful info Smiley smile

Julie - I agree, the timeline planning seems like it'll be stressful when I get to that.

We just booked our photographer on Sunday and I love your question because I need to make this decision as well. Something the photographer explained to us that never occurred to us is this. There is only so much time between the ceremony & dinner. In our case we have from 4:30 - 5:45. The photographer says that she prefers to start with the Guys at a park because this is when she'll do all the fun Guy shots & my Groom with each groomsman and his Parents. Then she says what works best is, she then comes to my Parents & starts with Wedding rings pic, my dress hanging up etc. I don't feel I need her there for makeup application pics or hair as to me, my Girls can get those pictures. She'll get pics of my Mom helping me put on my dress, my Dads first look etc and then me with my Parents, with each bridesmaid individually and group photo with my Parents and with bridesmaids. She wants to get to the ceremony a little early to get all the before ceremony pics, table settings, flowers etc. She says she'll do Family pics & the whole wedding party pics right after the ceremony and then she will take my Fiance and I off on our own to get our posed shots & must have photos. She'll stay until shortly after cake cutting. Our photographer said after 9pm, nobody needs to see those photos lol Wow. That's one busy time! It is very stressful trying to figure out the best timeline!

I booked our photographer to come 15 minutes before the ceremony to take a few pics of us lacing up the back of my dress, putting on lipstick, shoes and jewelry, and a few shots as I waited outside the ceremony room. Didn't need an hour of half done make up or me in my jeans and robe! Worked out well for us.

I would say that it should be fine to skip - but maybe get one photographer to come near the end of you guys getting ready so you can pose like you are putting makeup on or curling hair or whatnot. The guys don't matter as much Smiley tongue But of course send them over there for maybe a quick funny photo shoot - they could also pretend to put makeup on 😂

If it's a decision on Money then yes the getting ready photos can cut off a lot of time! And like you said! You all have phones for selfies and cute photos and filters! It's totally up to you! I am doing it because I got a good deal on a 12 hour coverage with our photographer!

We're doing some getting ready pictures right at the end when the dress goes on. We're not gonna get photos before hair and make-up are done, that's what selfies are for!

We also want more photo resources going towards the end of the night when the guest are having fun, dancing, that sort of thing.

In most of the weddings I've been in, the photographer has come right at the end of getting ready. so just before the dress goes on (which usually happens not long before you leave for the reception). that's what i plan on doing. and will have 2 photographers. one going to the boys place, one where i will be at.

if you are scheduled to leave at say 2pm. i would have them come only at 130pm

I do not have experience with this yet. But I am having my photographer come closer to the end of getting ready (When we are pretty much done) just to do pictures of getting dressed.

I would rather have more pictures at the end of the night of people dancing etc than just ones of us getting hair and makeup done.

Since we are getting ready at my Dad's house, there will be a good amount of family there that will be able to take pictures of us getting ready.
