Entertainment for sober friends and family

Meisha, on July 4, 2019 at 15:50 Posted in Wedding reception 0 8
Hi, I have a few friends who are recovering alcoholics/addicts and I'm looking for fun ideas for them. We will be having dancing, photobooth, and 2-4 player board and card games available, but I want them to have just as much fun as everyone else. My maid of honor is in recovery and loves photography so I might task her with a DSLR. How do you plan to accommodate and make comfortable people who won't be drinking?

Your being considerate about those who are recovering alcoholics. For the most part of separating them from the alcoholic beverages seems unfair as they can either control their limit or choose to not drink. There are always alternatives for fruit juices or pop. You don't want any complains or issues if you have the guests can't drink.

The games/activities and dancing will have them enjoying their evening and entertaining themselves. I do give you credit for arranging fun games for anyone else who don't like dancing too. Sometimes they get bored or just sit down for the most part.

I feel like you have lots of entertainment already planned! As it was already mentioned, your recovering friends and family might not want to feel singled out or given special treatment. When I was still a minor (late teens), I had lots of fun at weddings dancing!

Aside from that, having lots of non-alcoholic drinks available will help! It might be a good idea to have some non-alcohoolic drinks away from the booze so that your sober friends and family don't have to go up to the bar for a sprite or what have you. Depending on your venue, you might have to have all drinks in one area but definitely ask if you could have separate areas!

HI Meisha, that's great you are accommodating people in recovery. I would say even if you have lawn games outside during cocktail hour- not sure if its indoors. I would just say even with the board games that would be good. You could also ask your MOH if it isn't too touchy of subject to see what she would like to help her night go more smoothly

It's nice that you are taking their sobriety seriously and want to make sure they fully enjoy themselves, however i believe that part of their journey is to learn how to abstain in every situations. Just make sure to have lots nonalcoholic drinks available.

I agree with Chelsea! I work with many individuals in recovery, and majority of them want to just feel “normal” again and not be singled out. It would really depend where they are in their sobriety, and their own personal journey!

I agree - nothing special needed for the non-drinkers. They can still dance and enjoy the games and photobooth while sober and they don't need to be singled out.

I agree with chelsea. Some people don’t want special treatment. We have a few people who have some drinking issues that we are inviting but aren’t doing anything special for them.

One of my best friends is sober for nearly two years now, and i know she prefers for us to just act normal and not do anything extra for her. i would talk to your friends! see what they prefer! Each person’s journey is different! My friend and i have had this talk and she’s let me know it actually upsets her when people treat her differently just because she doesn’t drink. It’s worth having the talk!!
