Entertainment

Ashleigh, on December 10, 2018 at 14:10 Posted in Wedding reception 0 10
Hi everyone!

I’m Scottish but getting married at Niagara Falls in 2020. Looking at entertainment and was thinking of a DJ for evening reception but my question is the cocktail hour. Something we don’t have over here! Would you guys normally arrange some other entertainment for this?

TIA!

Ashleigh xx

Your DJ should be able to play some music throughout cocktail. If you have the budget to splurge I’d suggest looking at getting violinist or some sort of musical ensemble (duo, trio) they can play for your ceremony and the cocktail hour then when it’s time for dinner and party they pack up - it’s a lovely transition!

This is how I envision most cocktail hours so I don't think entertainment is necessary, but rather a preference should you opt to have it.

I agree - the DJ can play cocktail-appropriate music (usually similar to what they'd play over dinner).

Music would be nice but I’ve also seen weddings wherein the cocktail hour was the chance for folks to take photos (feature wall or photo booth), and mingle etc.

An alternative to a DJ would be tonjust playto just make your own cocktail hour playlist.

The DJ played music at our cocktail hour. Oh and my parents put together a slideshow. But the guests just chatted, mingled, had some drinks and canapes. I hear it was fun for them. It's only an hour and usually guests don't arrive exactly on time, so there's no need for additional entertainment.

Most cocktail hours I've seen had either the DJ playing softer tunes or a instrumentalist (think violinist, harpist, that sort of thing). Most of your guests will be mingling at this point so that's why most people have something softer in the background, it's still nice to have it.

The weddings I've been at with a cocktail reception as the dj playing soft music during the cocktail hour.

Our DJ works the cocktail hour too! Just softer music so people can talk! We actually debated getting a violinist in for the hour as something different you can look into that or a harp player? Some kind of soft instrument musician!

Hey Ashleigh, congratulations on getting engaged! I find that cocktail hours either have music or they don't. I honestly can't remember lol. I say you can skip it if it's not something you want.
