I would take into consideration location and lighting. I think it's also really sweet when couples stick to a complimentary colour palette, I think it tends to photograph nicely as well.

There's no set rule. Some choose to be super formal and dressy (ie rent a tuxedo and dress) while others go super casual (sweater and jeans). Pick something that makes you comfortable. Use your destination as inspiration if you're stuck.
