Engagement Photo Must Haves

Tori, on December 13, 2018 at 14:02 Posted in Before the wedding 0 22

So my engagement photos are taking place this Saturday!! I was wondering what were some of your must have photo-ops that you would recommend?? I haven't gone shopping yet but I do plan on picking up a blanket for us as well as maybe some mistletoe as well.

We are having two locations - first one will be early afternoon at Kildonan Park and the second one will be at the Canad Inns Winter Wonderland at the Red River Exhibition Grounds after 6pm.

What were some of the pictures that you love to look back at now? Are there any that you wish you had taken? Any picture that is on your must have list - please share!!

TIA

Yours turned out great! We ended up going to a park and took some on a bridge, on a log, in front of some pine trees and then the light show during the evening! Hopefully they turn out okay!

I completely understand - we got engaged last December and we waited all the way until this December to get them done so that it would be the right season! If they offer it - TAKE IT! lol

When we got them, I really thought I would hate the close up ones, but they're actually some of my favourites! I love that when I look at these photos, I can literally see his love for me in the way hes looking at me. It makes my heart skip a beat each and every time I see them.

The third photo was candid, although it doesn't necessarily look like it. We arrived at the beach before our photographer and decided to explore for a bit. We were checking out the fog and all we heard was "hey you two, look this way" and we got this photo. She also took one before we knew she was there with us looking in to the distance at the fog. I think having a fre candic photos makes it seem a little more natural at timesSmiley smile

If you can, try to go somewhere where you can have multiple background and scenery options, as it makes for better variations in photos, even if you do the same poses a few times!

    We are getting our “engagement”
photos taken a week before our wedding bc our wedding is cross country and it comes with the photographer’s package.

Will definitely be referring this photo in a few months time for tips!

I completely get you - I'm 5ft8" and it's so comforting even with a small height difference (FH is 6ft).

not an engagement photo. but i'm all about the lean in photos. a big factor is that I am so tall. and my FH is taller than me. so I love the "safe" feeling.

and we also have a lot of selfies with me with a big cheesy grin. and him kinda rolling his eyes/making a face. its such a common photo (when I drink..i wanna take ALL the selfies. and he doesn't). so we will definitely do something like that at our wedding.

Do the selfie like we did!! I know you said you were a fan on my engagement photo discussion Smiley tongue

Also I totally did the foot-pop thing Brittany mentioned, and I didn't even realize it!

    Engagement Photo Must Haves 7

Definitely get some great ring shots! We didn't focus too much on mine, but I kind of wish we did - Something I'm noting for the wedding photos! And definitely treat yourself to a mani!

My favourite ones were the ones where we were given direction, but it was still a candid shot:

Also if you have any opportunities to use props/lighting for some neat shots, use them!

Overall, have fun with your FH, I'm sure your photos will look great!!!

Just one piece of advice, especially if they are new at shooting engagements. Make sure they direct you! Of course you want the shots to be as candid and natural as possible but it helps to have a little direction. We got some fall engagement photos done because the girl was cheap and just starting out but when I got the photos back I was unhappy with some of them because of simple things that could have been fixed on the day to make the photos better. For example - there were a few photos where one piece of my bangs fell more in front of my face than the rest and separated from the rest of my hair and just looked weird. If she had said just move your hair a little bit or fixed it for me then the photos would have turned out a lot nicer. Photo below for reference.

Honestly, some of my favourite memories, and photos, from our engagement session were the unplanned ones. Let your personalities shine through, be a bit silly, and you'll have some amazing shots!Getting to ride in a 1920's car, dancing in front of the garage, unexpectedly being lifted up and hugged by my FH.

My photographer is actually a friend of mine so this will only be the second engagement photo shoot she has ever done so we don't have much to go on other than Pinterest :/

As for your picture - I'm in love! I have a feeling that my FH would want to do something like that but it probably wouldn't turn out the best with my winter jacket suffocating him 😂

Unfortunately this will be the photographers second engagement shoot ever as she is a friend of mine so she doesn't have much to offer in that department :/

But yes - I can't wait! She even went out and bought a flash for her camera and we are going to try the whole popping of champagne! lol

These pictures are beautiful! I agree with all the same shots! Plus your photographer will have some great ideas too!
This is actually my FH favourite picture( I just had it blown up and printed to hang in the house). When the photographer told us to do this pose I thought it was a bit weird. But actually really cute. If you zoom in he is laughing pretty good which makes the picture even better. The photographer told him he would like this pose because of how close to my boobs he was lol

I didn't go in with any musts, we kind of just trusted our photographer and he did amazing! I would talk to your photographer and see if they have any recommendations. Both of those are amazing locations and I am sure they will turn out fantastic!

Yaaassss... just stay away from any fishing nets Smiley xd And honestly, if you can, even treat yourself to a manicure! I don't often spend extra time on me, so I took advantage of the photos as an excuse to spoil myself.

Definitely paint your nails! I forgot to get mine done and it’s the only thing I regret because it would’ve made the pictures with the ring look better!

Oooooh you asked for it! Haha. Time for some bombardment of my favourite shots. These are the ones I have found that made me happiest, even over all the cutesy hugging/kissing poses:

    - Through the Trees (Bush/Grass) - where the focus is a little off... adds a cute vibe

    - Piggy Back - I asked for this one, I wanted a playful shot

    - Foot Pop - Super cute, and super flattering (this is everyone's favourite of our photos), you lean in so you get more of an arch in the back, then pop that back foot out! (Pick a cute shoe for this one!!! Haha)

    - Hands Only - I also asked for this one, I wanted a shot to focus on the ring, and have a sexier look

    - Walking - for some reason the holding hands/walking together, laughing/smiling, it just looks good in photos. People look so genuine, and it's more "in the moment" rather than posed

    - Embrace - my photographer caught this after the 'hands only' pic, I like it because I'm kind of hidden behind him, and it looks so cozy, haha.

    - Ring Shot - of couse, can NOT miss the ring shot. We brought the ring box just in case... some photographers use it, some just put the ring on the ground/leave/branch, whatever... Just be careful with it!
