Do your guests choose their meal with their invitations, or at the reception?

Shaylyn, on January 18, 2017 at 15:26 Posted in Wedding reception 0 8

The venue and caterer I'm booking for my wedding has a meal starter, choice of two entrees and dessert options for the dinner. What is the best way to allow guests to choose their meals? Do I send a meal card for each individual in the invitations or let them choose at the reception? What is more common to do?

Note: I have only ever been to buffet or family style reception dinner weddings but I really want a plated dinner for my wedding.

That's a good idea! If they don't have to choose their meal on the invitation, you could at least add a section to list dietary restrictions so you can give your caterer a heads up.

I was just at a plated wedding in October and we picked at the reception!! Was totally fine with that. Maybe you can ask if people need gluten free options etc.. to help the chef know that. People might forget and change their minds by the time the wedding comes anyways! ☺

Hey Shaylyn! I'm so happy to hear about these options! Smiley heart This sounds fantastic! I think you should double check with your caterer to see if they need to know what guests will choose in advance. If not, people can just choose on the day-of and that's amazing! Caterers usually want to know in advance if they are giving you entree options. So yes, I would think a meal card is a great idea! I love plated dinners too!!!! Smiley smile Congratulations!

I would double check with your caterer to confirm if they need to know which of the two entrees your guests will be ordering in advance. We went through a restaurant so our guests were able to order the night of the wedding, since they already had everything in stock. For most other caterers, they need to know how many of each entree they need so that they don't under order and not have enough or over order and end up with wasted food that they can't use for another event.

I agree with Valerie that I prefer to order the night of if possible! If you do have them choose with their RSVP, I don't think you need to have a meal card for each person. You could just list the options on one card per family and leave a space for them to write in how many meals next to it. If you did that, you would have to decide how you want to let your caterer know who ordered what. Would you have assigned seats and then give the caterer a copy of the seating chart? Would you mark it on their escort cards or give them a coloured ticket that they turn in to their server? There are lots of options!

My caterer has a "package" option where we get to choose from a list: two starters, two entrees and a dessert for a certain price. I personally think it's wonderful!! I haven't seen many other caterer's that have this as an option; most just have one-starter-one-entree option to serve to all guests for a similar price to what we're paying to have options! That's why I don't know how to go about having guests order what they want, especially for kiddos that might be picky if we can only serve them one choice as well Smiley smile

Both are fully acceptable. I think as a guest I would prefer to choose on the day of (as something might sound good to me 2 months out but day of the other option sounds amazing). It's odd your vendor doesn't make you do one or the other (odd but awesome!)
