Hey Everyone!!

If you are trying to keep costs down, how are you going about a DJ? I have the option to just rent the equipment and do our own music or get a DJ with that too... what would you do?

Thanks everyone!!

We are trying to keep our wedding budget friendly and at first we wanted to just use a Spotify playlist to play all of our music but as we planned more we realized we’d rather put our money in a professional DJ who can read the room and isn’t going to mess up important song transitions like for the ceremony. So my fiancé and I came to an agreement on cutting our money for a professional cake (which we were getting quoted $350) and are getting a friend to make it, and putting that money towards a DJ which where we live is around $1000 at the least. You just have to prioritize what is more important to you for your day. If you don’t mind being in charge of your music then go for it! But if you’re like me and are worried about the transitioning and just not wanting to add stress to your day, I would bite the bullet and pay for a DJ. Hope that helps!

My fiance and I are getting a DJ just because we don't want to worry about the music and the extra hassle.

A DJ is best to play songs you have in mind or genres you both like. Renting is fine though its not the same as the DJ not being behind it. We had a DJ for the wedding ceremony and reception. He was amazing and as an MC too.

Our plan has always been a playlist. I've assembled songs my Spotify account that my friends and I already love and add to it whenever I hear something that makes me want to dance. We've asked 2 friends to emcee and manage the playlist in case there is a lull or if someone has a request.

I had asked a friend about the DJ she used when we first started planning and she confessed it was Spotify. I honestly didn't notice and didn't remember.

I would definitely not DJ you’re own wedding, hiring a professional is in your best interest. They know what they’re doing with transitions and reading the room, you wouldn’t want your first dance to get ruined by someone accidentally playing the wrong song or something! I was a wedding bartender for a year and there was one wedding where they didn’t have a DJ but just had an iPhone playing music, it was a strange vibe and some of their songs got messed up because the phone cord kept cutting out. Definitely shop around and get quotes, there’s one DJ in my area that starts at $2500, which is insanity, I found our DJ who charges $900 for ceremony all the way until last call!

If you want and are expecting a full on dance party with a large guest size, a DJ is one area you shouldn't cut corners in my opinion. They can read the room and adapt accordingly. And it is my opinion that music for a party should be beyond your own musical tastes as long as it gets the crowd going and having a DJ who is well versed in different musical styles is super helpful.

If your crowd is not much of a dancing crowd and prefers a more casual lounge vibe where people are just chilling out, then you could probably make do without a DJ. Just make sure whatever app you use don't have ads.

I highly recommend not DJing your own wedding. It's your day to have fun and celebrate. Why would you want to be stuck behind a music player all night long?
