I have been at a wedding where It was DIY- they made a lot of salads prior to wedding and had people serve it- it was already in bowls needed and in fridges. then they hired someone to bbq a beef and slice it. They made all the deserts as well. If you are a cooking person and your family is willing to help it is doable

Hmmmm, well for my Wedding we are getting Danny's Whole Hog BBQ Smiley laugh

It is a buffet and so yummy - I think the base price was only $14/person too! (Of course I added a second meat and mac & cheese so I will be paying more - but still less than $20/person.) Aaaand my wedding is 250 people so they would have no problem supplying for 180.

If you are dead set on going with DIY you have to consider that you will need people to replenish the buffet table, buy or rent warming dishes, etc.

I haven't hosted any sort of parties so, I am wondering how much food to get and where to get it to serve 180 people. I would rather do it myself than pay a catering service. What would you suggest?

I haven't done a DIY buffet dinner before. Its hard to say for how many your looking to make based on the guest count. Simple things as veggie stick, fruit platters, finger sandwiches and cheese platters/crackers/bread sticks/assorted meats (antipasto). Doesn't take much time though the budget is considered in the thought.
