Dessert?

Kelly, on February 8, 2018 at 13:31 Posted in Wedding reception 0 8

We're having a bit of a tough time figuring out what to do for dessert. Our caterer offers an assortment of cheesecakes and dainties, but those don't sound terribly exciting, so we were going to cut them from the menu and do something else. We weren't going to do a cake, BUT now we're kinda leaning that way.

Here are my thoughts based on weddings I've been to:

When there is a dessert during dinner, then cake later, usually nobody eats the cake.

When there are cupcakes, maybe 1/3 of the guests will take one. And then the couple is left with 80 cupcakes to take home. Also, I hate cupcakes.

A friend of mine owns a bakery and would give us a really good deal on a cake. But like....What do guests expect of dessert at a wedding?? Ours is a buffet, so it would be self serve, but is having ONLY a cake a bad idea?

Or should we do a candy bar or something else? Multiple cakes? I don't want to spend $500 on dessert, that seems silly.

You want to go with cake and not have wastage. Would you consider going mini size desserts to allow the guests towards cake too?

I personally had chosen to do cake too and assorted pastried. Crème brulee with one choice was given part of the sit down dinner.

We have a consultation with our caterer this week, so we'll see what dessert options we have other than dainties.

There are a couple trendy doughnut shops were we live that make gourmet doughnuts, and we can get 4-5 different flavours, even gluten free! So that's where we'er leaning.

People like doughnuts. Doughnuts are bomb.

I don't really like cake so we had an assortment of different desserts for people to pick from such as mini pies in 2 flavours, mini cupcakes, brownies and mini carrot cake pieces.

My FH and I are doing a one tier cake so we have something to cut into (just for us) and then are planning to do a tiered platter of Cinnabon’s! We may also offer pies or some smaller desserts. We are getting married in the fall so our plan is to do an Apple dipper bar. Candy bar would be fun too though!

I think it's a good idea to offer some dessert, but I think it's totally up to you whether you offer desserts, cake, or some combination. Personally I skipped cake and did donuts and pies.

The only thing I'd recommend from experience is if you aren't going to be "cutting a cake" (even if that cake is a cheesecake or a cupcake or a donut etc) someone like your DJ should make an announcement that dessert is served. At a wedding I was in the couple didn't have cake and didn't want to do a cutting, but no one knew when dessert was served. Eventually some people wandered over to where the caterers were serving the dessert options and then the wedding party ran around trying to spread the news but it was very slow to get to all the guests. And no one wants to miss out on desserts! Of course, if you do dessert and skip the cake you can still cut the dessert if this is a tradition you don't want to drop.

Maybe do a dessert bar/station with something that both you and your FH want and are excited to have! I personally think wedding cake is overdone and newer, more appealing trends are emerging. We're not doing a cake (our venue includes a plated dessert and we're also having a dessert bar/station) and we didn't blink an eye at it.

We are doing cake and will have some donuts and cookies for people to snack on throughout the night until the midnight snack comes out. Most of our family aren't cake people so we wanted them to have options for dessert.

I don't see the point in doing a dessert AND cake to be honest.

Our venue, as part of our courses offers a choice to our guests of either Cheesecake or Chocolate Molten Lava Cake (mmmmmm). Because of this, we did away with having a cake.

HOWEVER, we are doing a late night table a few hours later. You could cut out the cake and do a late night table with some candies?
