Cultural Traditions Inspo Pics 1

Are you incorporating any cultural traditions from your family's heritage into your wedding? If so, show us what they are!

TL: Chinese weddings usually start with a tea ceremony where the couple pours and serves tea on our knees to the two parents as a symbol of the unification of the families.

BL: At the reception, it is custom for the wedding couple, parents, and sometimes the wedding party to visit each table and toast a drink all the guests. This is the Chinese version of a receiving line. You scream ganbei, which translates to "dry cup" (ie down the drink), clink glasses, and take a gulp (or a few for some of the wilder party animals).

TR: Chinese wedding receptions usually start with a serving of roast suckling pig and pickled jellyfish (it sounds gross to some of you but I assure you, it is delicious!). The two items are supposed to represent the ying and yang of marriage.

BR: A flaky pastry with wintermelon filling that we call "wife cakes" lol. It'll be one of the dessert options at the reception.

Center: A modern take on traditional Chinese wedding garb.

    Right on!

For Chinese weddings, the red dress is the traditional wedding dress but since a lot of modern brides have adopted the white dress, they use the red one for cultural specific family ceremonies.

If you find a blue dress you like, another great thing is that you'll end up saving SO MUCH MONEY compared to a traditional white one.

I’ve always planned on having a horseshoe charm on my bouquet as an extra equestrian detail! 😁

    It's the wedding dress.

I'm thinking something like this but I've seen different shades even a royal blue.

Blue was originally the symbol of purity (at least in Ireland) before white dresses became the norm. This is where "Something blue" comes from.

Is the blue dress meant to be the wedding dress or a separate dress for the reception?

    Irish weddings as well.
Not sure how I want to incorporate a horseshoe yet. I've read in modern weddings that some brides put a charm on their bouquet or have one sewn into the lining of the dress.

SO and I both have Irish heritage and were both raised with Irish influences in our lives.

We still need to discuss with our officiant about doing a Handfasting in the middle of our traditional western ceremony. He's wearing a kilt, I'm planning on a blue dress if I can find the correct colour and if not maybe a blue sash/belt... we'll see. My hair style will have braiding incorporated and hoping an Irish lady from our choir will play flute or bodhran or something during the ceremony.

Other things are bride wearing bells, carrying a horseshoe(sometimes a charm), celtic knotwork on the dress, barefoot during the ceremony (though our location may be too gravelly/stony). Those will be decided later.

    Not sure about reception yet.

    Those dresses are beautiful!!

In England it is traditional for the bride to carry a horseshoe. I’m hoping my mum can find the one she carried Smiley smile if not, I’ll probably carry a pony-sized shoe. I’m also hoping to use one of my horse’s old shoes as a centrepiece decoration!

As much as we like the gold accents to make it more Asian, we figured the families will bling her out with all the gold jewellery so it wasn't necessary. If anything, the excess gold would ruin the look.

If you really like the East Meets Dress look, maybe look for a Chinese knock off (who are we kidding, someone in China is probably making these dresses anyway lol). You'll have to pay duty but that also applies to an American business anyway.

That's so pretty!! I haven't heard of JJs House or Azazie before so I'll have to check them out! I made the mistake of looking at East Meets Dress first so when I think about a red dress all I can imagine myself wearing is this:

I just love the gold embroidery on these dresses and I like that they aren't too traditional looking. I'm going to a qipao store next week hopefully I find something there similar to these!

This is the dress my fiancee ordered from JJs House. She's not as slender as the model but the dress does make her not feel self-conscious about her shape. The only thing is, the sizes on JJs House is completely whack so it's a tad tight around the waist/upper back. To be fair, we should've anticipated this as her body is not typical of anyone in China. So now we have to get it altered on top of paying duty for it. Still cheaper than getting a dress from a typical dress shop like David's Bridal though.

We tried looking for one on Azazie because their sizing is a bit more accurate for my fiancee's shape but she couldn't find something she liked on their. And when she compared the fabrics to her bridesmaid's dresses from Azazie, she did say the JJs House ones were superior along with the stitching. We ordered the dress when things were still locked down but anticipating a December wedding. In hindsight, now that we pushed our wedding to this year, we should've waited to go to a qipao store in any of our numerous Chinatowns and just have them make one to size. We visited a few during the late summer last year and there's a ton of stuff that's not too old-fashioned. Their dress prices weren't too bad either.

Haha yes me too- it's either a qipao/red dress or no tea ceremony Smiley xd . No way in a million years will I wear a qun kua- they are tacky as heck. It's nice that you guys are doing the traditional bits with jewelry giving etc. Ours is not going to be traditional at all other than serving tea in a red dress. Given that my FH's family is British as heck and my family is not very traditional at all, we will definitely not get any red envelopes, which you can argue is the whole point of doing the tea ceremony in the first place anyway hahaha!

We opted not to use any of the Chinese fabrics. Fiancee feels the same way about the qipao, they're nice but she'll feel self conscious about her shape. And she really didn't want to wear a "kua" hahaha. Instead she's wearing a western red dress with lace and a train. I'll be wearing a tuxedo with ruby cufflinks and studs. We'll both accessorize with gold colored things like bracelets/bangles, gold pocket square for me etc. I'm sure the family will bling her up further with the golden pigs haha.

Oh my god YES! If there was a Canadian counterpart that would make life so much easier. All the dresses they have are gorgeous but so so expensive when converted to CAD + shipping. And also, you can only try on their sample kit if you're in the states Smiley cry

I've been looking around the qipao stores in Vancouver but man, are they sketchy...and not to mention old fashioned sheath silhouette, which basically makes everyone look like a potato unless you're a stick.

FH is likely not wearing a traditional outfit. Our wedding is in the summer and the tea ceremony is happening on a cliff side villa so it'll be way too hot. He will likely have a brocade tie or bowtie. Or maybe a lighter version of a traditional suit top.

    What are you guys planning?

My fiancee wishes there were a Canadian counterpart to East Meets Dress. After the exchange, it's pretty pricey.

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad this is a thread even if no one has really commented on it Smiley xd

We are doing a tea ceremony the day before the wedding but it's definitely not going to be traditional other than the actual tea serving and the red dress. We're just doing a small lunch after and not doing the gate-crashing games or traditional food. That dress in the middle of the picture you put up, Hank, is from East Meets Dress! I am obsessed with their line of dresses. So so pretty!
