Corkage Fees / Contract

Jared, on April 4, 2020 at 16:23 Posted in Wedding reception 0 3

Good day everyone!

Hoping to get a bit of advice regarding the venue we are going with. We are currently trying to bring our own alcohol (for cost reasons), and our venue has stated they will charge a $15/person corkage fee, despite there being no mention of corkage fees in the contract or in their wedding catalogue. I personally have never heard of a per person fee either. Curious as to opinions on how to reduce this cost, or if its warranted.

Thanks!

$15 per person seems steep, like you might as well not bring the alcohol yourself kind of steep.

If you're really concerned I would ask the vendor to point out where in the contract they mention corkage fees and if they can't just let them know that this is a potentially large unforseen fee and see what the options are.

How extensive is your contract? Does it cover the exact meal and cost? Because they usually don't, since meals and head count are usually determined much closer to the date. So even though it's not in the contract, doesn't mean it's not applicable.

Reason for fee per headcount instead of item is so you can bring a variety. You wouldn't want a per bottle charge for bringing a 24 case of beer. At least now you can bring beer and other individual drinks without costs adding up.

If it isn't in the contract or is only in the part for when using their bar services (like if you use their staff, mix, glasses, etc.) and you are doing every yourself - you should be exempt from this fee. But if the only part that you are doing is supplying the alcohol, the corkage fee sounds normal to me. Still if it's not in the contract, then maybe you can at least negotiate something less than that price?
