Combine two themes?

Slma, on September 2, 2019 at 10:55 Posted in Wedding reception 0 5
Hello. We are not planning on having a dance. My fiance isn't big into the idea, and the last couple of weddings we've been at people weren't dancing which just left an awkward space in the middle. Instead, we're planning on doing our own music and having table games throughout the reception venue: poker, black jack, board games, giant jenga, I just saw this giant wall scrabble board that looked pretty cool, etc. Our hope is that people will enjoy the music, mingle and play games all night. I'm just not sure how to fit this into our theme which is 'starry winter night'. We are having a winter wedding and plan to decorate with evergreen, lots of lights, stars and snowflakes. Thoughts on how to incorporate these two themes?

Our wedding is in February, so we won't be doing anything Christmassy at all. I do think it's a good idea to try to reserve a little space, even if just for the kids so that they have something to do.

Definitely! i never thought about it like a nice warm night in by the fire playing cards. But that is exactly what we're going for. You figured it out for me Smiley winking Those cards are great! And such a simple idea to execute. I could probably make my own poker and black jack table toppers out of navy blue felt and decorate that as well. Thanks for the great ideas!!

Have some more christmasy music mixed in. Maybe still make a small space and have some music people can dance to if they so desire. My mom had a dance space and danceable music and people got up and danced (especially after a couple beers) but they didnt dance at all because he had finished chemo 2 days before and was too weak. He couldnt even stand during most of the ceremony no matter how hard he tried.

Oooh that sounds lovely! I feel like those games you described already fit into a winter night theme as in the winter people stay cozy indoors and play games. I like bunnybride’s suggestion of incorporating stars and night skies/ winter colours into your game pieces and accessories.

    Howdy!
I think we are kindred spirits. My FH and I have a starry night them too (though not winter) and are doing board games/giant board games and video games on a projector as the entertainment. One thing to keep in mind is not everything has to match the theme. More popular route of entertainment, like a DJ, wouldn't have to, so the games don't necessarily have to either.

If you are looking for ways to meld them, one route to look at would be to little subtle touches on the games that fit your current theme rather than trying to mash the two together. Like playing cards that either have a starry or winter pattern on them (see pictures below). If you own the giant jenga game, you could do a simple snowflake or star stencil and paint it on or paint them in your wedding colours.

Just decorating the tables with the same kind of decor too might be enough to have it be cohesive throughout the entire space if that is what you are aiming for.

If your venue is more rustic/rustic chic vein, you could always take the angle of a winter starry night like at home/lodge/cottage playing games by a warm fire and looking at the stars.

Hopefully, some of this is useful...lol :-)
