Cheating on the budget

Katherine, on March 7, 2017 at 11:41 Posted in Before the wedding 0 10

Lately I have found myself being a bit less honest with the budget... For instance we bought a bunch of fariy lights when they went on sale after christmas, since we will use them for things other than the wedding they didn't make it on to the budget... Recently I had a big ticket item, my printer died so we had to buy a new one since we are printing our own invites and programs... I'm super conflicted about this, we could get by without a printer so technically it is for the wedding but our household budget is much larger... I just want an accurate accounting but once wedding budget is gone it is gone.

I am not keeping track of how much it is costing overall. we've found other ways to save for the wedding like accumulating pc points for food and alcohol (we have $350 worth of points now). I stick to a rough budget with everything but I don't sweat it.

I know what you mean, I feel the same way about some things. For example little items i have bought for decor around the reception, I'm using now around the house and will use after the wedding, so I haven't included any of them lol. Oh well!

I put a budget myself for the wedding and an extra for "Just in case". Sometimes this are out of control in a weeding and is good to have a backup plan (or money) 😜

We have a few items that are in the "wedding, but also for other purposes" category. We're adding them to the wedding budget because that is the initial reason for needing them. We're also adding them to the everyday budget with a note that the cost was covered in the wedding budget. We could have split the cost across both budgets, but we decided to put the full amount under the one that initiated the cost.

I think that happens to everyone! My husband and I kept a Google spreadsheet that we could share so we could keep track of everything wedding related. I tried my best to keep an itemized list of everything we spent so we could see where we were at, what still needed to be paid, etc. I think it helped my husband put things into perspective, otherwise he would have gone crazy at Michael's buying stuff!

LOL "entertainment" is a sneaky way to allocate things!

We just started paying for things but I can totally see myself doing this. My budget plan is to set aside a certain amount in my savings account every payday for the major purchases - dress, venue, cake, etc. and anything that I can easily take out of my household budget just gets paid that way. I'm still planning to track it all. I'm hoping to have everything big booked by end of May so we can just save to pay off all the expenses we're on the hook for.

Things I've paid for out of my household budget have all been under $40 - return address stamp, milk bottles and I consider it "entertainment" LOL

I am 100% guilty of this too! buy a little thing here, and little thing there....even when I save reciepts I forget to add them in. And then suddenly we are wondering where all the money went!
