Ceremony location ideas (other than in a church)

Katrina, on February 27, 2023 at 11:05 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 9
Hi community!

So my fiancé and I booked our reception venue thinking that we could do our ceremony at the church I attend. However when I had a discussion with the pastor he mentioned that since I am a Christian and my fiancé is not (he does however sometimes go to church with me) then he technically cannot officiate us.. Of course we would not want for my fiancé to go through all of the “courses” just in order to marry me and I don’t want that either! And if ever one day he does end up being a Christian (I am not forcing him) and that’s okay.
So now I am in search for ceremony venues .. I might have to reach out to a city hall and also going to a notary from the places I saw in my area most can only accommodate max 15 people .. I could always reach out to the reception hall as well.. As for the court house the ceremony is at most 10 mins…
Does anyone have any ideas? My parents suggested their backyard but then the cost to rent a tent, chairs, decorations.. + bathroom wise not sure if my parents would approve.. and they live in a small bungalow (not so big enough to accommodate 40 + people). Their backyard however is quite big and can accommodate ~ 80 people.

Keeping in mind that some provincial and federal parks require permits for use such as weddings. We will have to get one for ours at Dinosaur Provincial Park, but they won’t let us get it until after we are able to book our campsite, and we can’t book that more than 6 months in advance. It’s a pain in the arse but worth having the venue.

Hi there! I’m not sure where you’re located, but where I am there is public crown land that people can use as they wish. You could hold a ceremony for free there. We are also having a friend officiate, she is getting a temporary license for the day to do that, so cost saved there. I also went to an outdoor wedding where only a few chairs were provided for elderly guests and the rest of us stood. It was less formal but still lovely.

Also look into things like FB marketplace for rentals or people selling their wedding stuff for dirt cheap.

I would use your reception venue and find a secular officiant. This way, you can also bump down the ceremony and have more getting ready time (church weddings always happen no later than lunch hour) and there won't be any major down time where your guests need to kill time in between the ceremony and reception.

What is the style/vibe of your wedding? The following spots look beautiful :

    Jardin Royalmount

    Stewart Hall Gallery (grounds)

Or sometimes hotels have really pretty courtyards as well! Good luck!

    Hi Carine!

Thanks for the suggestion! I am looking in Montreal (Greater) Nothing downtown because parking would be a hassle. Open to something in the West Island (Pointe-claire and/or DDO) Our reception is in Ville Saint-Laurent

Depending on where in QC, you can look at parks, museums, art galleries, restaurants most places will accommodate a ceremony and then look at getting an officiant instead of a priest.

I don't know if it's the same in Quebec as it is in Alberta, but there are tons locations that are not churches. We have tons of botanical gardens around the city and they are extremely popular for wedding ceremonies in the summer. Maybe check to see if there is that!? Possibly a Pavilion? I was born in Montreal and my dad is saying there a tons of places like gardens in the area.

Maybe a provincial park or federal park in the area? It may be something that you do not find on wedding wire, but look up parks and gardens in your area.
