Canada Post: Mailing wedding invitations?

Jessica, on September 6, 2019 at 12:17 Posted in Before the wedding 0 15

Hello!

We are getting ready to mail our invitations but I was just wondering if there's anything specific we should know before sending them out. We will be mailing through Canada Post. I have heard that sometimes invited get returned based on where you put the return address, or wax seals get destroyed, and that you can't necessarily write fancy or on a coloured background because at some stages of the mailing process they are machine sorted. Anyone else with experience on this? I'm thinking of going to the post office to ask but I also don't necessarily expect the one person working at a desk to be familiar with every step of the mailing process.

Here's some details on our invites:
-Envelops are gold (can we write addresses directly on the paper, or do we need a white backing?)
-Planning to do wax seals on exterior
-Can we put the return address on the back?
-Some invites will be sent internationally

Let me know if anyone else is dealing with this or tips and tricks for getting invites where they need to go!

My envelopes were black, with a white square to right the addresses on. I dont think that the black was an issue for the sorting or anything as I just had a couple visitors to the wedding website and only way on is with the password from the invites so clearly delivered lol.

I am thinking to send out our international invites inside another cheaper white envelope as to not damage the wax seal, and to have a clearer address written on it. So it's basically two envelopes, the outer one is just to carry the real invitation inside to make sure it reaches the destination, it doesn't have to be fancy or anything. The fancy lettering and wax seal will be on the actual invitation envelope inside the "carrier" envelope.

We are planning to do this just for international invites, the local invites will be sent by Canada Post, hand cancelled, and the ones for our co workers and relatives will most likely be hand delivered as we always see each other Smiley smile

No as long as its legible. I've seen some awful handwriting. I personally saved myself the hand cramp and printed off labels on label stickers I bought from walmart. But as long as you can clearly see everything it's fine.

Thank you! Have you ever seen or heard of any problems based on the colour of envelops or handwriting?

I work for Canada Post as a manager. Here are some important things to know. Standard letter mail ( p stamps worth $.90) are only good for anything under 30 grams, and can be no larger than 245mm by 156mm by 5mm thick. For the same dimensions but between 30 and 50g its 1.27 stamp (these are technically us stamps but that is the same postage required for that weight. Between 50g and 100g or if it's thicker than 5mm but less than 20mm it's 1.90 stamp. International is 2.65 for standard mail. Make sure where it is going is clearly in the center and where it is coming from is either on the back or top left corner. Stamp goes top right corner.

We did plain white envelopes for our Save the Dates. I did plain white labels with black font for the guests name and addresses and I did small clear labels with black writing for my return address.

I even did my fonts in really nice cursive I found on Word and I didn’t have a single invite returned. So it worked out really well!!

I used glue to hold the invites down. Not sure if I’ll do a wax thing for the real invites but we’ll see.

For the international invites, I did it by Canada post express - it’s expensive.

We used purple metallic envelopes and wrote directly on them, to my knowledge all our guests got them (you could easily see the address). So from my experience, you should be able to write on your gold envelopes.

Make sure weight is good for one stamp, like Becky said, if it's under 30g it'll be one stamp. You can get stamps for US/international destinations too.

You can get the post office to hand cancel - meaning they'll stamp the stamp by hand so it shouldn't damage your wax seal. Didn't do this so not sure if it'd cost more.

I don't think it matters where you put the return address, for RSVPs, we just had our mailing address (I didn't put the guests' returning address on) and I got them back. Some people put their address on anyways.

    Hopefully this helps!!

I would take one invitation to the post office to have them weigh and put it through the slots to make sure you don't need extra postage.

We used a white envelope and black writing and had no problems - not sure about coloured other than we received a wedding invitation before that was a blue envelope with black writing and we... well.. received it!

Return address is most commonly put on the top left corner with the main address for the invitee on the front middle and stamp top right. Where I work we get letters from clients with their return address on the back so I don't see it being a problem.

We sent one invitation to family in the USA and just had to get a different stamp that was price different. I assume if you want you can just use 2 stamps (or more if your envelopes are heavy to begin with).

International ones I would recommend sending them either with a tracking number which would be more money but you know won't get lost in the mail. But if you don't mind sending an online version of it for them then when you go to your local Canada Post they have stamps for everywhere!

If you like your handwritting then write directly on the envelopes- I would use a white or black something that they can see.

I put my return address on the back of envelope on the seal

Internationally will need more postage- its also based on weight

Any you are sending if under 30g then its one stamp !
