Cake tasting

Lindsay, on November 5, 2021 at 14:37 Posted in Wedding reception 0 6
Hi everyone I have a question,

Is it common to have a comped cake tasting if we are buying the cake from that company? I am doing some research and this one company is changing $80 for a cake tasting when we are spending a fair amount for the cake…

The baker I went with would have open houses at her shop and I believe comp cake tasting was allowed when couples placed a deposit towards buying a cake from her.

However, a lot changed with Covid and she mainly works out of her home now. She instead makes cakelet boxes with all her available flavors and you can purchase this for $35. Each cake flavor is cut into 4 small slices, so you and your fiance and taste each cake and have an additional piece to go back and taste again when trying to narrow down your decision.

The only time a tasting is free is when they're giving out samples at a wedding/bridal show. Otherwise you typically pay for a tasting.

Not sure what $80 entails but some bakeries offer sliced versions of their wedding cake flavours so you can try smaller samples without committing to a whole cake just to try the flavour. And slices are cheaper than whole cakes.

We don’t even get the option!
Our cake is included in our package with the hall- and they don’t offer any tastings. We’re just going in blind. So, if I had an option I would gladly pay. But the companies I had researched prior to, they all had paid tastings…. I think this may be becoming more common.

I actually was lucky and got to try the cakes from where we are getting cupcakes but it was definitely an exception. They are a new business and they were trying to get some notice. The tasting was free though she did say that they will be doing a small charge once they are better established. $80 seems quite high for a tasting to me but I have no idea what the prices are for your area.

My fiance and I would be paying for a cake tasting if we were able to have one. Since we're getting married in a different province, we're not able to get out there in time to be able to have the tastings. The company is making samples for you to try so it makes sense for them to charge you for that as well as there time and effort to make the samples as well.

I think it makes sense for companies to charge for cake tastings, they could be out a lot of money if lots of people have a tasting and don't hire them. But what I thought was most common was paying for the cake tasting then when you hire them, the cost of the tasting comes off the cost of the cake.
