Booze controversy!

Laura, on February 23, 2019 at 09:02 Posted in Wedding reception 0 8
Hi! I have a dilemma. 90% of my family doesn't drink and most of his drink like there no tomorrow! We have decided we will still have booze even if it might offend some however, we are not sure how to go about it money wise.

We wanted to have an open bar but if it's by the person, then we end up paying for half the guests who won't drink. We definately know they won't be paying full price for their drinks. Idk what to do.

I would say to skip an open bar if possible and go with a host bar instead. Open = pay per person, Host = pay per drink served.

If your only option is open bar then try and do the math as to how many drinks will most likely be had vs. how much per person to see if the venue is worth it.

P.S. Congrats on your engagement and welcome to the Wedding Wire community!

Do you have a venue already? I met with a venue that give you the bill after the wedding you have two weeks to pay the bill of the open bar and you pay for what people drank.

Now, not all venues have this option, I met with a golf course Greyhawk in Carlesbad Springs, in the Ottawa region, not sure where you’re planning to host your wedding. But ask around at what the open bar is, all the venues I met with did something different!

How about hosting a toonie bar? This way you're not paying for what isn't being bought, if that makes sense!

Depending on how much your open bar is, it might still be worth it. The bar tab could balance out if his family/others drink enough.

I'm not sure prices. We are in the early stages and have not researched it thoroughly yet. I was hoping to get a few options/ideas to play around with. Thank-you for your responses. We might do just that.

How much is your open bar? Ours at the venue was $15 per person which is like... less than 2 fancy drinks at a restaurant. At this price we were okay since if some didnt drink, we assume others would have 3 or 4 drinks and make up for it!

I have the same issue but the opposite. My family drinks a lot (polish people love their vodka) and only a few people in his family drink.
We have an open bar as it is included in our package, but 90% of the drinking will be done by my family.
