Bartender tip jar and added gratuity?

Rachel, on February 25, 2022 at 11:20 Posted in Wedding reception 0 3

Hi! Is it common for there to be an automatic 20% gratuity AND tip jars for the bartenders? We're having an open bar, so I don't expect that a lot of people will have cash on them. The company we're hiring already has put a 20% gratuity on the bill. I hear from a lot of people that having tip jars out makes them feel a bit awkward, and we're already tipping them. Just wondering if that's common practice. Thank you!

We had gratuity added to the contract and on top of this tipped each staff member individually (because as mentioned gratuity on contract does not just go to the bartender) so therefore I insisted no tip jar for the bartender. Thankfully the catering company was not going to have a jar out anyway and to be honest, I do find them tacky - we really wanted our guests to come, enjoy, have a drink and not be digging into their pockets but that was just us. Had the catering company asked to do so I would have rejected the request.

Most weddings I have been to have tip jars at the open bar. The Grat is added to your bill, yes, but that 20% isn't just for the bartenders, it gets split among the servers, chefs, bartenders, banquet staff (those who help set-up/tear down events), so it's not uncommon for the bartenders to put out a jar or two. I typically tip them $20

I've seen tip jars at venues with open bar service that tacks on gratuity. It's common and a few people might throw in a tip thinking they can get better service, but most people I know just ignore it.
