Bar Questions- Cash Bar we buy everything

Brittany, on February 14, 2020 at 09:54 Posted in Wedding reception 0 7
Hey everyone,
My fiancé and I are trying to have a cheap but still very nice wedding. (We are still in school so we don’t have a lot of money)
We don’t have to have to spend over $1000 on a venue and then have to use their overpriced caterers when we don’t want a sit down dinner. Just finger foods and snacks. There are two community centres near my house I grew up in that can be rented for weddings. And it just so happens that I know the person that runs one of them and could probably get a discount. My mom also knows someone that runs events at the other community centre.
My mother was saying that you are able to get a liquor license, buy all the alcohol, get a friend to be the bartender, and sell it for cheaper than it would be if we hired a bartender. This is a great option for us as we have families and friends that really like their booze. We also wouldn’t mind buying all the alcohol because we will make our money plus some back.We however, have no idea how to go about buying all of the alcohol. Should we include on the save the dates that everyone should pick a type of alcohol they love and we can ensure we have something for everyone? And how do we ensure that we buy enough alcohol. The liquor store will take back any unopened stuff so that’s not a problem if we have too much, but how do we make sure we have enough? Also, should we slowly buy it over time when things go on sale? Or can we get a discount for buying it in bulk? Thanks everyone for the help!

Its a great idea of knowing you have a community center near your home to host a wedding. LCBO.ca has a event license which you pay $35 for one day, once printed and presented to the store, you can purchase all the liquor you need for the day. As for guests to be aware of what to expect when coming to the reception, Cash Bar can be written on the invitation.

I will post a chart to show how many guests and drinks should be served based on what your getting for the bar as a guide.

From experience at a work party don't try to please everyone with brands or types of alcohol. We had so many open barely drank bottles and brands of beer with one or two out of the case.

Get the most popular options, like white wine, red wine, beer (maybe a domestic and a micro brew), and mixing liquor like whiskey vodka rum and gin. Make a simple menu of mixed drinks available (rum and coke, vodka cranberry etc.) unless you have a mixologist friend who can handle making 37 Dave Matthews or Whiskey Sours. Or you could have a signature mixed cocktail or two and only serve that with beer and wine to keep things really simple.
You don't need "too shelf" booze, stick with midline brands of each to save money. Also go for bottles instead of kegs because you can store unused bottles for another party or potentially return unopened cases (ask the liquor store about their policy). And anyone can open a bottle, not everyone knows how to tap a keg.

Exactly! And tbh if you ask everyone what they like to drink, you'll drive yourself crazy and stress out. Everyone like a certain beer or a specific drink. But like you said everyone will drink no matter what, so there is no need to stress or break the bank trying to please everyone Smiley smile

Thanks, I’ll definitely check out Pinterest. And yeah, that’s true. I guess I’m just overly meticulous about things. People will drink no matter what’s there, as long as the basics are

There are some resources even on Pinterest that can help give you an idea of how much liquor to buy based on the amount of people you have attending your wedding. You also don't need to buy everything that everyone likes or the brands. Sticking to the basics usually does the trick such as rum, whiskey, beer, vodka, etc. The extras like tequila, scotch, etc you don't need to worry about.

That sounds reasonable. I assume it would be the same or very similar here in NB. Thanks!

At least here in MB you would put in a bulk order to the Liquour Mart (only place you can buy alcohol in MB other than a beer vendor). If you end up running low on something you can always go send somebody to grab more and just make sure you staple that new reciept to the permit so it's all accounted for. (Again, that's what we do in MB.)
