Am i missing anything else ? - Legal Steps

Jessica, on May 23, 2018 at 10:31 Posted in Before the wedding 0 3

On my wedding checklist I am at the point where I should begin the legal steps to get married. As far as I know all I require is a marriage liscence but those are only good for so long so I don't want to get it yet. Is there anything else legally before the wedding that needs done ?

Other than liquor licences and such, not really!

The only properly legal thing is the marriage licence and an ordained officiant.

Marriage licences are good for 90 days, we did ours at 2.5 months in advance.

To get married all you need is the marriage license, unless you've been previously married.. then you'll also need a divorce certificate with the fancy little sticker in the corner. It seems like it should be more difficult to get married and that more paperwork should be involved, especially with all of the planning we do for the actual wedding, but there isn't! Just go to your local courthouse and they set it all up for you. You can find the information on the government website about the requirements. Don't forget, you also need somebody who is legally able to marry you. If they are not legal, then it is not a legal marriage, despite signing the fancy legal paperwork.

If you need a liquor license (bringing in your own alcohol to the venue), you'll have to get that. In addition, our venue required us to purchase event insurance as well so we had to get that sorted. Otherwise, you'll be getting your marriage license no sooner than 90 days before your big day!
