Alternative Venue Help

Shania, on April 6, 2020 at 16:40 Posted in Wedding reception 0 7

Hi Everyone! My Fiancee & I are REALLY struggling to find a reception venue! We live in a small town with not many options, and REALLY don't want to settle for a hotel ballroom. We've looked into community halls (they're old and smell funny), outdoor spaces (tents are EXPENSIVE), restaurants (not large enough), and everything in-between. I'm feeling very much at a loss. Any advice on what to do when you can't find ANYWHERE?

Most of our guests will be travelling from Alberta and Saskatchewan, so I was really looking forward to showing off the beauty of the area I live in, however I suppose that is something I could give up.

We're looking at 150-180 depending on the venue. There isn't much for AirBnB but could look into vineyards not too far away.

Assuming you've already taken a look at what venues are listed here on WW (Wedding Venues in Cranbrook BC), what about looking into maybe a museum, vineyard/brewery, or maybe a mansion (maybe on airbnb or something)?

If guest count isn't something you are wanting to compromise on - what # are you looking at having?

Are you willing to do a destination wedding or sorts? You're not THAT far from Calgary and a 4 hour drive will make it just far enough that guests can consider it a mini getaway while not far enough that they have to rearrange their lives for it. Going to the city will infinitely open up your options. There's also Lethbridge, which is slightly closer but will also likely be cheaper than a main city like Calgary.

The golf courses don’t have big enough club houses, and unfortunately my mom has a severe horse/livestock allergy so most barns are out. I appreciate the suggestions though!

Based on some of your other posts, it seems you want an outdoor-ish venue but covered. How about a resort that's within an hour from where you live? Maybe a barn or golf course?

Try looking into theatres or theatre rehearsal spaces. Smaller community theatres often have room for about 100 people, the larger ones can go up and up. A traditional theatre you can use the existing seating for the ceremony downstage with some of the stage curtains lowered, then raise them to reveal the reception area behind or upstage. Without sets and curtains stages are actually big open spaces. Sound and lighting equipment is usually already there too.
