Air Bnb Reception?

Stevie, on August 17, 2022 at 15:29 Posted in Wedding reception 0 12
Hi friends,

Congrats to everyone on their engagements!
We are having a small ceremony (20 guests) and we’re considering having a reception to follow at a local Air BnB (up to 30 guests).
We found a few places available with outdoor space as well as indoor space.
We’re thinking about just ordering pizza, having wine & champagne available and maybe doing a little karaoke in one of the rooms.
It’s hard to find a place that will allow us to host an event like this, even though we’re offering to sign additional waivers to ensure no damage etc…
Has anyone looked into this type of reception? Any better ideas for a small, affordable, laid back celebration?
Thanks in advance!

I definitely think it does depend on the host! Hopefully, I can find someone who will get me a contract outside of air bnb if they're worried about liability for that reason

I had lost hope on finding a venue and was looking at air bnb and even though the fine print says no parties, when we messaged the owner privately and told them what our plans were a lot of them were okay as long as we paid extra for damages and cleaning. The site state no parties to protect their clients as in the past people would damage the place and the cleaning cost and damages were low. If you do find a place always get everything in writing from both parties and make sure to have a legal binding contract that this is how much you are paying no additional charges with be applied and that the owner accepts all responsibilities after the set fee has been put into place. Have both parties sign the contract and have two witnesses present.

I heard from a wedding planner that this was becoming illegal but I’m not sure if that’s just in the states!
We are having our rehearsal dinner at our Airbnb (40 ppl ) usually they do not allow this but for some reason she made a consideration for me so maybe it just depends on the host!

So restaurant wont help with set up and tear down but I am having my MOH and bridesmaid go in and do a quick set up and take down after that fact. They take care of everything from serving us drinks, bringing out food and bussing. We are allowed to decorate, the restaurant already has all the linen and I am coming in with center pieces and candles.

The restaurant charges by minimum spend depending on which space you book. So the one I chose that will seat up to 40 people, private balcony, comes with extra tables for presents and cards, cake table and also our own personal bar, it came ay $6000 for minimum spend. Which was fairly easy taking into account the average cost of drinks and everyone getting 7 as well as the food stations.

We are spending about $3200 for the food and $3000 for the alcohol for everyone by the end of the night. Also of course taxes and gratuity is extra.

This is a really good idea too! We actually live in a downtown condo like this but we’re having our ceremony in another city and don’t want to ask people to drive 2 hours for the reception.

That’s a good idea that I didn’t really consider. Are you comfortable sharing the cost range that you were given for something like that? Do they take care of bussing and everything after the fact? Are you allowed to decorate? Do you need to hire someone for tear down?

Definitely need to read the fine print! I’ve found that some people are willing to do a contract outside of air BnB for this type of thing, they just charge more than the usual rate.

    Lots to consider!

We also did a small celebration (23 people) and I was originally looking at renting an Airbnb cottage but honestly all the ones I loved stated no parties and rules were pretty strict and so I did not want to have such restrictions.

Do you know anyone who lives in a fancy condo? We ended up renting a party room in a nice condo in downtown Toronto and it had a terrace so it was perfect additional space, it also came equipped with a fancy bar/kitchen and honestly was more than enough room so I would definitely recommend that or a small intimate restaurant that has a nice private back room or something. Good luck!

I was looking at doing the same in Banff but there are now way too many rules with Airbnb for partying that it was extremely hard to come across one. So instead for our micro wedding we chose a restaurant to host at.

Our party is 40 people and we are doing food stations and a late night snack with 7 drink tickets for each person, so pretty much free drinks. It is a bit pricey but totally worth it.

Check some restaurants in the area and see if you are able to book a room/area for your wedding!

I would honestly check your air bnbs most of them now don't allow parties of any sort. It might be different in Ontario but I know in bc and in kelowna particular all air bnbs state that they don't allow any parties even if it's a small group of 10-20 or even 30 people.
