Advice on location for engagement photos

JuneBride, on May 8, 2018 at 10:29 Posted in Before the wedding 0 27

We are having our engagement photos in early June. The locations we are looking at are things we love to do. We enjoy hiking and seeing waterfalls, we spend time at the beach, and we also go jet skiing and canoeing. We also tour wineries and go horseback riding. We are having a hard time choosing and agreeing what two locations are better for our engagement photos and which two locations are better for our trash the dress session. We are looking for opinions on which locations look better as engagement photos and which locations look better with me in a wedding dress.

I'm thinking of a waterfall for our engagement photo.Advice on location for engagement photos 1

And a winery for our second location for our engagement photos. FH thinks we should keep it for trash the dress session.Advice on location for engagement photos 2

Be mindful that many places require permits for photography (wineries, some parks, etc) and your photographer might charge extra for multiple locations.

That said my advice would be to make sure wherever you go is a) easily accessible and not a huge trek (you waste a lot of time walking which means less photos) and b) not going to be overcrowded with other people (tourists, etc) mulling around in the background.

We did ours at the lakefront (Rouge Hill), but we chose sunrise specifically for the lighting and because we knew it would be empty.

The waterfront in Burlington is beautiful and have rocks by the lake to get nice shots.

Okay, I'm just saying that you should be careful! Even the "lighter" dresses I tried on had some weight to them that I could only imagine gets heavier when wet.

Even by not going that far into the water, a big wave of water can ruin what you envisioned- and regardless of what fabric or clothing you wear, water makes fabric feel heavier.

I love the waterfalls and canoe scenery for engagement photos but they are all lovely places for engagement photos. I'm not sure what trash the dress is so don't know which scenery would work best.

My fiance and I did our engagement shoot at Spencer Gorge in Hamilton. A beautiful (although somewhat tricky) hike and a few waterfalls to choose from. We had an absolute blast!

For trash the dress, I'd go somewhere with water, but I have an affinity for that sort of thing...

If its the same one I read about she had a ballgown dress. Thats not what im going to wear. We are staying where the waves wash up on shore. I'm not going far out into the water.

Love the winery and waterfall idea for engagement photos or trash the dress photos. I'd be cautious about doing the trash the dress at the beach since I read a horrible news story where the bride was swept under because her dress became too heavy when wet. Be careful Smiley heart

I want to have fun and take some cool pictures with my wedding dress without worrying about getting wet or having dirt or grass stains. I want to take the pictures I can't on my wedding day.

Because I'm hoping all it will do is just get dirty and I'll be able to get it dry cleaned. It's not like I'm going to throw paint or rip it.

Fair, but why trash the dress?! if you have no plans to keep it after, give it to a second hand shop

I know about that. She was wearing a cinderella ballgown type of dress. That's not what I'm going to wear and I'm not going deep into the water. We're going to sit in the shore where the water washes up. It will be fine.

    worth reading (and noting!)
"Sometimes the ‘trash the dress’ concept can runaway from its original intentions though, such as it did for 30-year old, Maria Pantazopoulos in 2012. During her watery photo shoot, the dress caught the current, dragged her underwater and she drowned. So it’s really important to know the limits of safety when ‘trashing the dress.’"

    Trash the dress photo?
sounds super odd...then again, the dress i wore in mine was new, just bought and it cost me a good chunk of money (almost $180 after tax!). I had to be super careful when we did our photos near the waterfall @ Toronto Botanical Gardens.

I think the waterfall or winery would work really well for engagement pictures! I think it's best to pick a location where you can get a few different types of pictures in the same physical location, so you can maximize the time with your photographer!

I consider the one with the horse trashing the dress because I don't want to take a picture at a ranch with my wedding dress until after my wedding day. It can get dirty.

If you plan to do a trash the dress, you'll probably want somewhere that is easy to "trash" it. So any place with water or mud would be ideal. I'm not sure a horse would provide a lot of options for "trashing".

Otherwise, all the locations are fantastic for engagement photos. Choose two that represent yourselves best or places you've frequented as a couple to make it more meaningful for you.
