a Reporter Showed Up At My Wedding This Past Weekend

Slma, on September 14, 2020 at 19:00 Posted in Wedding reception 0 8

We had a beautiful Banff wedding planned for this winter. We cancelled with the intention of rescheduling. That lasted for about 2 days before we decided just to get married. We planned everything in about 6 weeks and tied the knot last night. We had about 30 people at our wedding reception and then a different set of about 30 people who met us at a bar where we had rented a private space later on in the evening. We knew we couldn't have everyone in one spot at one time so we split it up more or less. It was dreamy and beautiful and perfect. I had the best day. However, a reporter showed up at our reception, completely uninvited. I'm not even sure how he got in as we were in a private room. He approached a few people before someone told me that he was there and I went over to talk to him. He said he wanted to write an article about planning and hosting a wedding during a pandemic and that he had been "tipped off" that we were having a wedding so he decided to invite himself in. He was slimy for sure. I didn't answer any questions and politely suggested he finish his drink and then leave. My husband's groomsmen were less polite and told him he could finish his beer elsewhere and to gtfo. (Not that it matters, but I found out afterward that he put his drink on my billl, jerk...). Anyone have any experiences like this?

This is crazy. The nerve of some people! I would have handled it far less gracefully haha. But I’m so glad you had an amazing day nonetheless! Congratulations!

At the very least, I think you should email his editor to tell them that their employee decided to drink on the job and charged you for it. He deserves reprimand even if not in a public forum.

How rude! I’d let your venue know of what happened in case he chooses to frequent the establishment. I can’t imagine too many brides being happy about a reporter crashing their wedding.

He was legit. I looked him up with the info from his business card and read a few of his other articles. Our reception was in Edmonton, just off Whyte. I think blowing it up all over twitter kind of defeats the purpose of us asking him to leave. We just wanted to be left alone. I'm not interested in starting any sort of story, even one that calls him out.

I have a feeling his credentials are fake and he used that as a cover to sneak in and drink free booze. What outlet did he say he was with? Most major news operate out of Calgary or Edmonton in Alberta and I highly doubt the editorial team would send someone on a 2+ hour drive just to chase a "gotcha at a wedding" story.

If he is legit, blow it up all over Twitter and if you have his name (he can't claim to be a reporter without showing a badge) share it online. This is beyond unprofessional and if he did this with the support of his employer, they deserve to be called out.

I can't believe he would put his drink on your bill! At the very least the drink would have been the "cost" of his story and he probably could have gotten the newspaper/magazine/website to foot the bill.

I hope his crashing didn't put a damper on your party. Congratulations on your marriage!!
